🔧 Diagnose & Fix Charging Issues: Step by Step
Step 1: Try a Different Cable AND Adapter
Cables fail more often than ports. Borrow a known-good cable from a friend, or grab a spare. Use a different wall adapter too — counterfeit chargers are a common silent killer.
Step 2: Inspect the Charging Port with a Flashlight
Hold the device under a bright light and look directly into the port. You're looking for:
- Gray pocket lint compressed against the back wall (most common)
- Bent or recessed pins (drop damage)
- Green corrosion on the contacts (liquid damage)
- Stuck-on residue from sticky drinks
Step 3: Clean the Port with a Plastic Pick
Power the device OFF first — this prevents short-circuits while you work. Then:
- Insert a plastic precision pick at a slight downward angle
- Work toward the back wall, then drag forward to pull lint OUT (never push deeper)
- Repeat from different angles — port lint is layered
- NEVER use metal — paperclips, needles, or pins will short the contacts
Step 4: Brush + Compressed Air
After picking visible debris, sweep the port with a soft anti-static brush, then short bursts (1 sec) of compressed air from 6 inches away. Keep the can upright to avoid propellant spray.
Step 5: Try Wireless Charging
If the device supports MagSafe/Qi: try wireless charging. If wireless works but wired doesn't, the port is dead — you need replacement (see escalation below). If wireless ALSO doesn't work, the issue is likely the battery or charging IC.
Step 6: Force Restart
Sometimes iOS/iPadOS gets stuck in a charging-block state. Force restart resets the power management chip:
- iPhone 8 and later: press Vol Up, then Vol Down, then hold Side until Apple logo

This setting controls both NameDrop and the close-proximity AirDrop feature.
NameDrop requires a Contact Poster to share:
- Open the Contacts app
- Tap My Card at the top (or your name)
- Tap Contact Photo & Poster
- Choose Edit or Create New
- Select a photo/Memoji and customize the design
- Tap Done then Continue
- Choose what info to share (name, phone, email)
- Unlock both iPhones
- Hold the TOP of your iPhone near the TOP of the other iPhone
- Keep them close (within a few centimeters)
- Wait for the glow effect and Contact Poster to appear
- Both users tap Share to exchange, or choose Receive Only
Tip: The animation won't trigger if you're touching sides or bottoms — it must be the TOP edges of both phones.
1. Check AirDrop Settings
- Settings → General → AirDrop
- Select Everyone for 10 Minutes or Contacts Only
- Make sure Bringing Devices Together is ON
2. Enable Bluetooth & WiFi
- Open Control Center
- Make sure both Bluetooth and WiFi icons are ON (blue)
- Toggle them off and on again to refresh
3. Disable Personal Hotspot
Personal Hotspot can interfere with NameDrop:
- Settings → Personal Hotspot
- Toggle OFF "Allow Others to Join"
4. Check Both Phones
Both phones need:
- iOS 17 or later
- NameDrop enabled (Bringing Devices Together)
- Contact Poster set up
- Screen unlocked and active
5. Restart Both iPhones
- Press and hold Side Button + Volume Up
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds, power back on
- Try NameDrop again
- Wrong position: Make sure iPhone tops are almost touching
- Cases interfering: Thick cases can block NFC — try without cases
- Screen locked: Both screens must be on and unlocked
- Focus Mode: Some Focus modes block NameDrop — disable temporarily
NameDrop also works between iPhone and Apple Watch (watchOS 10.1+):
- On Apple Watch: open Contacts app, tap your card, tap Share
- Bring Apple Watch near the top of another iPhone
- Contact Poster appears on both devices
- NameDrop requires user action — it won't share automatically
- You control what info is shared (name, phone, email)
- You can choose "Receive Only" to get without sharing
- Disable completely: Settings → General → AirDrop → turn off "Bringing Devices Together"
If NameDrop still fails:
- Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings
- Enter passcode
- Reconnect to WiFi after reset
- Try NameDrop again
