iPhone NameDrop Not Working - Fix Contact Sharing

⏱️ 5-10 minutes 📊 Easy 💰 Free (software fix)

NameDrop lets you share contact info by holding two iPhones close together. Introduced in iOS 17, it uses the same technology as AirDrop but for quick contact sharing. If NameDrop isn't working, this guide covers all the fixes.

📋 Requirements for NameDrop
  • Both iPhones: Must have iOS 17 or later
  • Models: iPhone XS/XR or newer (requires U1 chip for best results)
  • Contact Poster: You need a Contact Poster set up
  • Bluetooth & WiFi: Must be enabled on both devices
  • Proximity: Hold phones close together (tops almost touching)
  • Unlocked: Both phones should be unlocked
✅ Enable NameDrop
  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap AirDrop
  4. Enable Bringing Devices Together

This setting controls both NameDrop and the close-proximity AirDrop feature.

🪪 Set Up Your Contact Poster

NameDrop requires a Contact Poster to share:

  1. Open the Contacts app
  2. Tap My Card at the top (or your name)
  3. Tap Contact Photo & Poster
  4. Choose Edit or Create New
  5. Select a photo/Memoji and customize the design
  6. Tap Done then Continue
  7. Choose what info to share (name, phone, email)
🔧 How to Use NameDrop Correctly
  1. Unlock both iPhones
  2. Hold the TOP of your iPhone near the TOP of the other iPhone
  3. Keep them close (within a few centimeters)
  4. Wait for the glow effect and Contact Poster to appear
  5. Both users tap Share to exchange, or choose Receive Only

Tip: The animation won't trigger if you're touching sides or bottoms — it must be the TOP edges of both phones.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check AirDrop Settings

  1. Settings → General → AirDrop
  2. Select Everyone for 10 Minutes or Contacts Only
  3. Make sure Bringing Devices Together is ON

2. Enable Bluetooth & WiFi

  1. Open Control Center
  2. Make sure both Bluetooth and WiFi icons are ON (blue)
  3. Toggle them off and on again to refresh

3. Disable Personal Hotspot

Personal Hotspot can interfere with NameDrop:

  1. Settings → Personal Hotspot
  2. Toggle OFF "Allow Others to Join"

4. Check Both Phones

Both phones need:

  • iOS 17 or later
  • NameDrop enabled (Bringing Devices Together)
  • Contact Poster set up
  • Screen unlocked and active

5. Restart Both iPhones

  1. Press and hold Side Button + Volume Up
  2. Slide to power off
  3. Wait 30 seconds, power back on
  4. Try NameDrop again
⚠️ NameDrop Won't Appear?
  • Wrong position: Make sure iPhone tops are almost touching
  • Cases interfering: Thick cases can block NFC — try without cases
  • Screen locked: Both screens must be on and unlocked
  • Focus Mode: Some Focus modes block NameDrop — disable temporarily
📲 Works with Apple Watch Too

NameDrop also works between iPhone and Apple Watch (watchOS 10.1+):

  1. On Apple Watch: open Contacts app, tap your card, tap Share
  2. Bring Apple Watch near the top of another iPhone
  3. Contact Poster appears on both devices
🔒 Privacy & Security
  • NameDrop requires user action — it won't share automatically
  • You control what info is shared (name, phone, email)
  • You can choose "Receive Only" to get without sharing
  • Disable completely: Settings → General → AirDrop → turn off "Bringing Devices Together"
🔄 Reset Network Settings

If NameDrop still fails:

  1. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings
  3. Enter passcode
  4. Reconnect to WiFi after reset
  5. Try NameDrop again
