Folders Best Practice

  • Group by USE CASE not category — 'Daily', 'Travel', 'Work'
  • Max 9 apps per folder (page 1 fits without scrolling)
  • Name folder with single emoji or 1 word
  • Limit total folders to 4-6 — fewer to remember

Bad: 'Productivity' folder with 27 apps.

Good: 'Daily' folder with Mail, Calendar, Notes, Reminders.

App Library (iOS 14+)

Swipe past last home screen page → App Library. Auto-organizes apps into categories: Suggestions, Recently Added, Social, Productivity, etc.

Use App Library to find apps you don't put on home screen. Reduces clutter.

Hide Apps from Home Screen

Long-press app → 'Remove App' → 'Move to App Library'. App stays installed, accessible via App Library, but no longer cluttering home screen.

Use for: rarely-used apps you don't want to delete.

Hidden & Locked Apps (iOS 17+)

Long-press app → 'Require Face ID' or 'Hide and Require Face ID'. App needs Face ID every time you open it. Hidden apps don't show in home screen, App Library, or Spotlight search.

Use for: dating apps, Banking, sensitive content. Privacy upgrade.

Custom Icons via Shortcuts

  1. Find/create custom icon image (square, 1024x1024 px)
  2. Open Shortcuts app → +
  3. Add Action → Open App → pick app
  4. Name shortcut (e.g., 'Mail')
  5. Tap (i) icon → Add to Home Screen
  6. Tap icon image → Choose Photo → upload custom icon
  7. Add

Drawback: opens via Shortcuts → app, half-second delay. iOS 18 Tinted icons may have made this obsolete.

iOS 18 Tinted Icons (New)

Long-press home screen → Edit → Customize → Tinted. Pick a single color: every app icon recolors to match. Same color for unified theme.

Free, instant, built-in. No Shortcuts hack needed.

Multiple Home Screens (Per Focus)

Different home screens for different Focus modes. Work mode: only work apps + calendar widgets. Personal: social + games. Switch automatically by location/time.

Settings → Focus → tap focus → Customize Screens.

Reset Home Screen

Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Home Screen Layout. Clears all customization, returns to factory order. Useful for fresh start.

My Setup

  • Page 1: Empty top half (wallpaper visible) + 1 row of 4 most-used apps + dock
  • App Library: everything else accessed via swipe
  • Hidden & Locked: banking apps, password manager, sensitive content
  • Tinted icons in single accent color matching wallpaper

Total visible apps: 8. Beautiful, fast, focused.
