iPhone Personal Hotspot Not Working? 11 Fixes

Personal Hotspot option missing, other devices can't find or connect to it, or hotspot keeps disconnecting? This guide covers every fix for iPhone hotspot problems on all models.

⏱️ 5-15 min 💪 Easy 📱 All iPhone models with cellular

Common Causes

  • Hotspot not in your plan — carrier may not include hotspot or requires an add-on
  • "Personal Hotspot" option missing — carrier settings need update or APN misconfigured
  • Other device can't find hotspot — Wi-Fi name/password mismatch, Bluetooth off, or iOS sleep
  • Hotspot keeps turning off — Low Power Mode disables it automatically
  • Connected but no internet — carrier data issue or throttled plan
  • Mac can't connect via USB — driver or trust issue
Check your plan first. Personal Hotspot requires a cellular data plan that includes tethering. Some carriers charge extra for hotspot. Contact your carrier if the option never appears — it may be blocked at the account level.

Step-by-Step Fixes

1 Enable Personal Hotspot

  1. Go to Settings → Personal Hotspot
  2. Toggle "Allow Others to Join" ON
  3. Note the Wi-Fi password shown — you'll need it on the connecting device
If Personal Hotspot isn't in Settings at all, go to Settings → Cellular → Personal Hotspot — it sometimes lives there depending on carrier.

2 Update Carrier Settings

Missing hotspot option is usually a carrier settings issue:

  1. Connect iPhone to Wi-Fi
  2. Go to Settings → General → About
  3. Wait 10 seconds — if a carrier update is available, a popup appears asking to update
  4. Tap Update and restart

3 Toggle Airplane Mode

  1. Go to Settings → Airplane Mode → ON
  2. Wait 10 seconds
  3. Turn Airplane Mode OFF
  4. Re-enable Personal Hotspot and test

4 Turn Off Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode automatically disables Personal Hotspot to save battery:

  1. Go to Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode → OFF
  2. Or charge the phone above 80% — Low Power Mode disables itself

5 Keep Hotspot Screen Open

iOS turns off hotspot discoverability after a few minutes of no connections to save battery:

  • Keep the Settings → Personal Hotspot screen open while connecting from another device
  • Or enable "Maximize Compatibility" (2.4GHz mode) — more stable but slower

6 Enable "Maximize Compatibility"

  1. Go to Settings → Personal Hotspot
  2. Toggle "Maximize Compatibility" ON
  3. This switches from 5GHz to 2.4GHz — wider device compatibility, especially for older laptops

7 Forget and Reconnect on the Other Device

  1. On the connecting device (Mac, iPad, laptop), forget the iPhone's hotspot network
  2. Turn that device's Wi-Fi off and back on
  3. Search for the hotspot again and reconnect with the correct password

8 Reset Network Settings on iPhone

Clears all network configs including VPN and APN settings that may block hotspot:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings
  2. iPhone restarts, then reconnect to Wi-Fi and re-enable hotspot
This clears all saved Wi-Fi passwords — you'll need to re-enter them.

9 Connect via USB (Mac)

USB tethering is faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi hotspot:

  1. Connect iPhone to Mac with a Lightning/USB-C cable
  2. On iPhone: tap Trust when prompted
  3. On Mac: go to System Settings → Network — "iPhone USB" should appear
  4. Select it and you have internet via USB tethering

10 Connect via Bluetooth

Alternative to Wi-Fi hotspot — lower speed but very reliable:

  1. On iPhone: enable Settings → Bluetooth
  2. On connecting device: pair with iPhone via Bluetooth
  3. On Mac: System Settings → Network → Bluetooth PAN → Connect

11 Restart iPhone

  1. Hold Side + Volume Down, slide to power off
  2. Wait 30 seconds, restart
  3. Re-enable hotspot and try connecting again
