⚠️ Note: This guide is for iPhone 8 and earlier, which have physical home buttons. iPhone X and newer use gestures instead (swipe from bottom for home). If you have a newer iPhone, check the (/guides/iphone-x-not-responding-to-gestures.html) guide instead.
Diagnose Your Problem First
Home button issues fall into two categories:
- Button won't click: You press it but nothing happens, or it's stuck and won't pop back up
- Touch sensitivity gone: Button clicks but the phone doesn't respond to it (software issue)
Try all 6 fixes in order—most issues are software and resolve within minutes.
Fix #1: Restart Your iPhone
A simple restart fixes 70% of home button sensitivity issues. It resets the touch system without erasing anything.
Steps:
- Press and hold the power button (top or right side) until "Power Off" slider appears
- Drag the slider to power off
- Wait 30 seconds
- Press and hold the power button again until the Apple logo appears
- Once it boots up, test your home button immediately
Fix #2: Clean Around the Home Button
Dust, lint, and dried sweat can build up around the home button, making it unresponsive or sticky.
Steps:
- Power off your iPhone
- Get a soft, lint-free cloth (microfiber is best)
- Dampen it with a tiny bit of water (NOT soaking wet)
- Gently wipe around the home button area
- Pay special attention to the cracks between the button and the frame
- Use a dry cloth to wipe away any moisture
- Wait 10 minutes before powering back on
⚠️ Don't: Use excessive water, compressed air, or try to pry the button. These can push liquid inside and cause short circuits.
Fix #3: Disable Touch ID & Re-enable It
The home button in modern iPhones uses a Secure Enclave (the fingerprint sensor). Sometimes this gets confused and stops responding. Toggling it resets the connection.
Steps:
- Open Settings
- Tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode for older models)
- Enter your passcode
- Scroll down and toggle off iPhone Unlock
- You'll see a warning—tap Turn Off to confirm
- Wait 10 seconds
- Toggle iPhone Unlock back ON
- Follow the on-screen prompts to re-register your fingerprint (quick process)
This resets the Touch ID system without losing your saved fingerprints.
Fix #4: Try AssistiveTouch (Temporary Solution)
If your home button is still not working, you can use AssistiveTouch—a software replacement that puts a virtual home button on screen.
Steps:
- Open Settings
- Tap Accessibility
- Tap Touch
- Tap AssistiveTouch
- Toggle ON
- You'll see a white circle on your screen (the virtual home button)
- Tap it to return home, customize it in settings
💡 Customize AssistiveTouch: Go back into AssistiveTouch settings and tap "Customize Top Level Menu" to change what the button does. You can make it function exactly like your home button.
Fix #5: Check Home Button Settings
iOS has settings that change how the home button works. Sometimes these get misconfigured.
Steps:
- Open Settings
- Tap Accessibility
- Tap Home Button
- Check the settings:
- Press to Open: One click should open the home screen (toggle ON if OFF)
- Click Speed: Should be set to Default (not Slow)
- Test your button with these settings enabled
Fix #6: Update iOS
Old iOS versions sometimes have bugs affecting the home button. Updating to the latest version often fixes these issues.
Steps:
- Open Settings
- Tap General
- Tap Software Update
- If available, tap Download and Install
- Your phone will restart during the update
- Once complete, test your home button
When It's a Hardware Problem
If you've tried all 6 fixes and your home button still won't work, it's likely a hardware failure. Your options:
Signs of Hardware Failure:
- Button is physically stuck or won't click at all
- Button clicks but makes a grinding sound
- Button works inconsistently (on/off, random failures)
- AssistiveTouch works fine (proves it's the physical button, not software)
Repair Options:
- Apple Store: $199-$299 (includes labor + parts + warranty). Usually same-day repair for iPhone 6 and later.
- Third-party technician: $75-$150 (cheaper, but no official warranty). Check reviews before going.
- Live with it: Use AssistiveTouch. Works great, zero cost. This is actually viable long-term if you don't mind the on-screen button.
Can You Replace the Home Button Yourself?
⚠️ Not recommended: Home button replacement is difficult for modern iPhones. Apple's newer buttons use a Secure Enclave (chip in the button itself) that requires special tools to pair with your phone. If you open the phone yourself:
- You'll void the warranty
- The new button won't work without re-pairing (requires Apple's proprietary tools)
- You risk damaging the flex cable, which costs $100+ more to repair
Exception: Very old iPhones (iPhone 5 and earlier) have simpler buttons that can be replaced DIY. If you have an older phone, there are excellent YouTube guides available.
Prevent Future Home Button Issues
- Clean regularly: Wipe around the home button once a month
- Use a case: Protects the button from impacts and debris
- Avoid water: Don't use your phone in the shower or rain
- Don't drop it: Home button flex cable can break from impact
- Keep it updated: Apple fixes hardware bugs in new iOS versions
