Lossless Audio — Free, Just Enable It

Apple Music subscription includes Lossless. To enable:

  1. Settings → Music → Audio Quality
  2. Choose 'Lossless' or 'Hi-Res Lossless'
  3. Lossless: 24-bit/48 kHz (CD quality+)
  4. Hi-Res Lossless: up to 24-bit/192 kHz (studio master quality)

Caveat: Bluetooth (AirPods, Sony, etc.) cannot carry full Hi-Res Lossless. You only get full quality via:

  • Wired USB-C / Lightning headphones
  • USB-C DAC + audiophile headphones

Spatial Audio — 3D Audio for AirPods

Spatial Audio adds height and surround positioning to music and movies. Works with:

  • AirPods Pro 2
  • AirPods Max
  • AirPods 4 with ANC
  • Some Beats models

For Apple Music, look for the Atmos badge. For movies, any Spatial Audio-compatible content.

Personalized Spatial Audio (Better)

Settings → AirPods → Personalized Spatial Audio → Set Up. iPhone uses front camera to scan your ear shape, then generates a custom 3D audio profile tuned to your anatomy.

Real difference. Music feels more accurately positioned. Worth the 5-minute setup.

Dolby Atmos for Movies

Apple TV+, Netflix, Disney+ and others support Dolby Atmos. With Spatial Audio-compatible headphones, you get cinematic surround sound from a phone or iPad. Way better than stereo headphones.

Wired vs Bluetooth — Real Differences

Bluetooth audio is COMPRESSED. Even with the latest codecs (LDAC, aptX HD), it's not lossless. Apple's AAC over Bluetooth is decent but not pristine.

If you want TRUE lossless, you need:

  • Wired headphones via USB-C or Lightning
  • OR a USB-C DAC + analog headphones

For 99% of users, AAC over AirPods is plenty. For audiophiles, wire up.

Quick Audio Quality Test

Pick a song you know well in Apple Music. Toggle between Standard, Lossless, Hi-Res Lossless. Listen on your AirPods or Bluetooth headphones. If you hear a difference: great, use Lossless. If you DON'T hear a difference: don't worry about it — your gear can't reproduce the difference, save the cellular data and use AAC.
