iPhone showing "iPhone is disabled" or "Connect to iTunes"? Locked after too many wrong guesses? There are two ways to recover access โ one may preserve your data. This guide covers both for all iPhone models on iOS 15 through iOS 18.
Resetting a forgotten passcode requires erasing the iPhone. This is a security feature โ without it, anyone who found your phone could bypass the lock. Your data can be recovered IF you have an iCloud or computer backup. No backup = data is gone after reset. Check iCloud.com first to confirm a backup exists before proceeding.
On any computer or device, go to iCloud.com โ sign in with your Apple ID โ Account Settings โ Backups. Note the date of the most recent backup for your iPhone. If there's a backup from the last few days, your data is safe โ proceed with the reset. If there's no backup or it's very old, consider whether the data loss is acceptable before continuing.
Connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC with a cable. Then enter Recovery Mode using the correct button sequence for your model:
iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16: Quickly press and release Volume Up โ quickly press and release Volume Down โ press and hold the Side button until the Recovery Mode screen (cable + laptop icon) appears. Keep holding through the Apple logo.
iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: Hold Side button + Volume Down simultaneously until Recovery Mode screen appears.
iPhone 6s and older: Hold Home button + Sleep/Wake button simultaneously until Recovery Mode screen appears.
On Mac (macOS Catalina or later): open Finder โ your iPhone appears in the sidebar โ click Restore. On Windows or older Mac: open iTunes โ click the iPhone icon โ click Restore iPhone. Choose "Restore" (not Update) when prompted. This downloads the latest iOS and performs a clean install, erasing the passcode along with all data.
After the restore completes, your iPhone starts as new. During setup, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" โ sign in with your Apple ID โ select the most recent backup. Your photos, apps, contacts, and settings restore over the next 15โ30 minutes. Data added after the last backup date won't be recovered โ this is why regular backups matter.
On any browser or another Apple device: go to iCloud.com/find โ sign in with your Apple ID โ click All Devices โ select your iPhone โ click Erase iPhone. This remotely erases the phone and removes the passcode lock. The phone must have had internet access at some point recently for the erase command to reach it. Once the erase completes, you can restore from backup during setup โ same as Method 1 step 4.
During setup, create a passcode that's at least 6 digits. Avoid obvious sequences like 123456, your birth year, or repeated digits. Consider using an alphanumeric passcode (letters + numbers) for stronger security โ Settings โ Face ID & Passcode โ Change Passcode โ Passcode Options โ Custom Alphanumeric Code. Enable Face ID or Touch ID so you rarely need to type the passcode anyway.
Settings โ [Your Name] โ iCloud โ iCloud Backup โ toggle ON โ Back Up Now. iCloud backups happen automatically overnight when your iPhone is plugged in, on Wi-Fi, and locked. This ensures you always have a recent backup. For more frequent backups or larger data volumes, connect to a Mac/PC and back up via Finder โ computer backups are faster and can be encrypted to include Health and payment data that iCloud backups sometimes exclude.
Some iPhones resist Recovery Mode if the button timing is off. Try: (1) Make sure iTunes/Finder is open before connecting the cable. (2) Try a different cable โ some USB-C cables don't carry data. (3) Try a different USB port directly on the computer, not through a hub. (4) On Mac, check that macOS trusts the iPhone โ a dialog may appear asking to trust the device. If Recovery Mode still fails after multiple attempts, Apple Support can assist remotely or at an Apple Store.
If Recovery Mode isn't working or you're dealing with Activation Lock from a previous owner, PC Medics of NJ can walk you through the process in person for all iPhone models.
