If This IS Your iPhone — How to Unlock

  1. If you remember your Apple ID password: Just enter it. Done.
  2. If you forgot the password: Tap 'Forgot Apple ID Password' on the activation screen. Apple sends a recovery code to your verified phone or email. Reset password, unlock.
  3. If you've lost all recovery methods: File an Apple Account Recovery request at iforgot.apple.com. Apple will verify your identity over days/weeks (this is intentionally slow to prevent theft). With original purchase receipt, the process is faster.

If You Bought a Used iPhone with Activation Lock

You bought it stolen or from someone who forgot to remove it. Solutions:

  1. Contact the seller — they need to sign into iCloud.com → Find My → Devices → tap the iPhone → Remove from Account. Takes 1 minute on their end. If legitimate sale, they'll do it.
  2. If seller is unresponsive or refuses: The phone may be stolen. Apple can't help you remove Activation Lock without the original owner's permission. Period. No legitimate exceptions.
  3. Get a refund or report fraud if seller won't cooperate. Don't waste time on third-party 'unlock services' — they're scams or use stolen credentials.

Apple Store with Proof of Purchase

If you have the original receipt or proof of purchase from Apple/an authorized reseller, take it to an Apple Store. Apple can unlock the phone after verifying purchase. This works for iPhones you bought new or refurbished from authorized sellers.

Used iPhones from eBay/Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace WITHOUT receipt won't qualify — Apple has no way to verify ownership.

Why Bypass Tools Are Risky

You'll see ads for 'iCloud unlock services' for $30–$200. Reality:

  • Most are scams — they take your money, do nothing
  • Some use stolen Apple ID credentials — you become an accessory to fraud
  • Working ones often only unlock for a session, then re-lock
  • iOS updates close bypass methods regularly
  • If caught using bypass, Apple permanently blacklists your iPhone serial number

Don't risk it. If the iPhone is legitimately yours, use legitimate channels (Apple Account Recovery). If not, return/refund.

Buying Used Tip: Check Activation Lock Before Paying

Before buying a used iPhone:

  1. Ask seller to power off the phone
  2. Power on — does it ask for an Apple ID? If yes, walk away unless seller will sign out RIGHT THEN
  3. Better: meet in person, have seller go to Settings → [Their Name] → Sign Out, with their Apple ID password
  4. Wait until they erase the phone and you're at the 'Hello' setup screen
  5. NOW pay them

This 5-minute check saves you from a $400 paperweight.
