Face ID not recognizing your face, showing "Face ID is not available," grayed out in Settings, or just taking multiple attempts? These fixes cover iPhone X through iPhone 16 Pro Max on iOS 17 and iOS 18.
Clean the TrueDepth camera โ the small notch/Dynamic Island area at the top of the screen. Skin oils, sunscreen, and smudges on the dot projector or infrared camera block the face scan. Use a dry microfiber cloth. This fixes a huge percentage of "won't recognize me" complaints.
Face ID works by projecting 30,000 infrared dots onto your face and reading the pattern with an infrared camera. The entire process happens in under a second. When it fails, it's almost always one of three things: something blocking the TrueDepth sensors, a software state issue, or a face data quality problem that needs re-enrollment.
On iPhone Xโ13: the notch at the top contains the dot projector, flood illuminator, and infrared camera. On iPhone 14 and 15: the Dynamic Island pill. On iPhone 16: the Dynamic Island + updated sensor array. Any smudge, screen protector edge, or case lip covering this area degrades Face ID. Use a dry microfiber cloth โ never spray liquid near the sensors.
Thick or poorly-aligned tempered glass screen protectors frequently block the top sensor array. If your Face ID degraded after applying a screen protector, that's almost certainly the cause. Remove the protector and test โ if Face ID works immediately, get a protector with a proper sensor cutout designed for your exact iPhone model.
Face ID requires your eyes, nose, and mouth all visible and within ~25-50cm. Wearing a hat that casts a shadow, lying at an extreme angle in bed, or holding the phone too close (under 25cm) all cause failures. It also needs to see both eyes open โ Face ID won't unlock if one eye is closed. In low light, it switches to infrared and still works, but extreme darkness (no ambient light at all) can cause issues.
Settings โ Face ID & Passcode โ Set Up an Alternate Appearance. If you've changed significantly (new glasses, beard, major haircut, weight change), adding an alternate appearance teaches Face ID your new look without deleting the original enrollment. You can store two appearances total. This dramatically improves recognition for people who look different across seasons or situations.
A full restart clears the biometric authentication daemon state. Hold Side + Volume Down โ slide to power off โ wait 30 seconds โ restart. After restarting, Face ID requires your passcode first (this is by design, a security feature) โ enter it once, and Face ID activates for subsequent unlocks.
Settings โ Face ID & Passcode โ enter passcode โ Reset Face ID โ Set Up Face ID. Do this in a well-lit room, holding the phone in your normal unlock position, moving your head in a full circle for each scan. If you usually unlock while lying in bed or at a desk angle, do a second enrollment in that position using the Alternate Appearance slot. Quality of enrollment directly determines recognition accuracy.
Settings โ Face ID & Passcode. There are separate toggles for: iPhone Unlock, iTunes & App Store, Wallet & Apple Pay, Password AutoFill, and Other Apps. Each can be individually disabled. If Face ID works for unlocking but not for App Store purchases, check that the "iTunes & App Store" toggle is on โ it's a common oversight.
Settings โ General โ Software Update. Apple has issued specific Face ID reliability patches in multiple iOS versions. iOS 18.2 and 17.5 both included TrueDepth camera fixes. Running an outdated version with a known Face ID bug is an easy miss.
Settings โ Face ID & Passcode โ "Require Attention for Face ID." If this is ON, Face ID requires your eyes to be open and looking at the screen โ useful for security but causes failures if you glance away. Turning it OFF makes Face ID less strict and improves recognition for people with certain eye conditions or who look away while raising the phone.
Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ Reset โ Reset All Settings. This doesn't delete data but resets system preferences including Face ID configuration data. After resetting, re-enroll Face ID fresh. Resolves persistent failures caused by corrupted biometric preference files.
If Face ID is grayed out or "not available" after a restart and the phone is at normal temperature, a DFU restore is the last software step before concluding hardware failure. Connect to Mac/PC, enter DFU mode (iPhone 8+: Vol Up, Vol Down, hold Side button 10 seconds, release Side button, continue holding Vol Down 5 seconds), restore in Finder/iTunes. If Face ID is still unavailable after a clean iOS install, the TrueDepth hardware needs service.
