๐ Difficulty & Time
๐ง Diagnose & Fix Charging Issues: Step by Step
Step 1: Try a Different Cable AND Adapter
Cables fail more often than ports. Borrow a known-good cable from a friend, or grab a spare. Use a different wall adapter too โ counterfeit chargers are a common silent killer.
Step 2: Inspect the Charging Port with a Flashlight
Hold the device under a bright light and look directly into the port. You're looking for:
- Gray pocket lint compressed against the back wall (most common)
- Bent or recessed pins (drop damage)
- Green corrosion on the contacts (liquid damage)
- Stuck-on residue from sticky drinks
Step 3: Clean the Port with a Plastic Pick
Power the device OFF first โ this prevents short-circuits while you work. Then:
- Insert a plastic precision pick at a slight downward angle
- Work toward the back wall, then drag forward to pull lint OUT (never push deeper)
- Repeat from different angles โ port lint is layered
- NEVER use metal โ paperclips, needles, or pins will short the contacts
Step 4: Brush + Compressed Air
After picking visible debris, sweep the port with a soft anti-static brush, then short bursts (1 sec) of compressed air from 6 inches away. Keep the can upright to avoid propellant spray.
Step 5: Try Wireless Charging
If the device supports MagSafe/Qi: try wireless charging. If wireless works but wired doesn't, the port is dead โ you need replacement (see escalation below). If wireless ALSO doesn't work, the issue is likely the battery or charging IC.
Step 6: Force Restart
Sometimes iOS/iPadOS gets stuck in a charging-block state. Force restart resets the power management chip:
- iPhone 8 and later: press Vol Up, then Vol Down, then hold Side until Apple logo
- iPad with no Home button: same as iPhone 8+
- iPad with Home button: hold Top + Home until Apple logo
โ ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pushing lint deeper instead of pulling it out
- Using metal tools (instant short risk)
- Skipping the cable test โ cables fail more than ports
- Cleaning while the device is powered on
๐ฅ When to Call a Pro
If the port has bent pins, visible corrosion, or the contacts feel loose, you need a replacement (Apple: $129, third-party: $79โ$99, AppleCare+: $99). Skip DIY for this โ bent contacts can damage the logic board.
๐ Fix #1: Restart Your iPhone
Always try this first:
- Hold Side + Volume Up/Down until slider appears
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds
- Press Side button to turn on
eSIM often activates after a restart.
๐ถ Fix #2: Check Cellular Settings
Make sure your eSIM line is enabled:
- Settings โ Cellular
- Tap your eSIM line
- Toggle Turn On This Line ON
- Check Data Roaming if traveling
๐ก Fix #3: Check Carrier Settings
Update your carrier settings:
- Settings โ General โ About
- Wait 30 seconds โ if an update appears, tap Update
- Restart iPhone after updating
๐ Fix #4: Toggle Airplane Mode
Reset your cellular connection:
- Open Control Center
- Tap Airplane Mode ON
- Wait 30 seconds
- Tap Airplane Mode OFF
โฌ๏ธ Fix #5: Update iOS
eSIM bugs are fixed in updates:
- Settings โ General โ Software Update
- Install any available updates
- Restart after updating
๐ง Fix #6: Reset Network Settings
This often fixes stubborn eSIM issues:
- Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset โ Reset Network Settings
- Enter your passcode
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi after reset
Note: This erases Wi-Fi passwords but keeps your eSIM.
๐๏ธ Fix #7: Remove and Re-add eSIM
If nothing else works, remove and re-add your eSIM:
- Settings โ Cellular
- Tap your eSIM line
- Scroll down, tap Delete eSIM
- Contact your carrier or use their app to get a new eSIM
- Scan the new QR code or use carrier setup
Important: You may need to contact your carrier first!
๐ Fix #8: Carrier-Specific Issues
Some carriers have specific requirements:
- Account must be active โ Check for payment issues
- eSIM must be provisioned โ Carrier must enable it
- Transfer limits โ Some eSIMs can only transfer a few times
- Compatible plan โ Not all plans support eSIM
Contact your carrier if you get "eSIM cannot be added" errors.
๐ Fix #9: eSIM Transfer Issues
If transferring eSIM to a new iPhone:
- Both phones must be nearby and on Wi-Fi
- Old phone must be unlocked during transfer
- Some carriers require you to call them to transfer
- Quick Start method works best for eSIM transfer
โ ๏ธ Common eSIM Error Messages
- "eSIM cannot be added" โ Contact carrier, may need new activation
- "No Service" โ Check cellular settings, carrier settings update
- "SIM Failure" โ Restart iPhone, reset network settings
- "Invalid eSIM" โ eSIM may have been deactivated by carrier
