Method 1: Erase iPhone (Lockscreen Option)
iOS 15.2+: After 7 wrong passcode attempts, iPhone shows 'Erase iPhone' option on lock screen. Tap → enter Apple ID password → confirm. Erases everything but lets you start fresh and restore from backup.
Method 2: Find My + Erase
- Go to icloud.com on any device
- Sign in with your Apple ID
- Find My → All Devices → pick locked iPhone
- Click Erase iPhone
- Wait — phone wipes completely
- Set up as new (or restore from backup) when phone reboots
Method 3: Recovery Mode (Last Resort)
- Connect iPhone to Mac/PC via USB cable
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC)
- Force iPhone into recovery mode:
iPhone 8+: press Volume Up, Volume Down, hold Side button until 'connect to computer' icon - Computer detects iPhone in recovery → 'Restore' option appears
- Click Restore → erases iPhone, downloads latest iOS, reinstalls
- Wait 30 minutes
- Set up phone normally
Restoring from Backup After Erase
If you had iCloud Backup or Finder/iTunes backup before lockout: during setup, choose 'Restore from Backup'. Pick latest. Phone is back to where it was when last backed up. Without a backup: lost data unfortunately.
If iPhone Has Activation Lock (Stolen)
Activation Lock means another Apple ID is signed in. CANNOT be bypassed. CANNOT be removed by Apple unless you prove ownership (original receipt + Apple ID details). If iPhone is yours, you have those records. If not yours: it's stolen.
Prevention: Set This Up Today
- Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Stolen Device Protection ON
- Settings → Apple ID → Find My → Find My iPhone ON
- Use a passcode you'll remember (write it down somewhere safe)
- Set up iCloud Backup so you can restore if you ever lock yourself out
- Enable Auto-Backup at night via Wi-Fi + power
