It is a software-displayed interactive area built around the TrueDepth camera and Face ID sensors.
Tap the Dynamic Island to expand it and see more detail, and long-press to open full interactive controls like music skip or timer pause — the long-press is the power move most users never discover. Swiping left on the island dismisses a Live Activity you don't want to see. When multiple activities run at once, like music plus a timer plus Maps, the island intelligently splits to show them together.
Among Apple's own apps, the standouts are Apple Music (now playing and skip), Apple Maps (turn-by-turn directions), Timer, FaceTime and Phone calls, AirDrop progress, and Personal Hotspot status. For third-party apps, Flighty's live flight tracking is arguably the best implementation and won an Apple Design Award, alongside Uber and Lyft ride status, DoorDash and Grubhub delivery tracking, ESPN live scores, Spotify, and Strava workout stats.
Go to Settings > Notifications, select the app, and toggle Live Activities off — that stops it from appearing in the Dynamic Island. For a one-time dismissal, just swipe left on the island. Note that Live Activities also appear on the Lock Screen with the same info, and keeping activities running does add a slight amount of battery drain, though the impact is minor.
