iPhone Disabled? Forgot Passcode?

Locked out of your iPhone after too many wrong passcode attempts? Or forgot your passcode entirely? Here's how to regain access to your device.

⏱️ 15-45 min 💪 Moderate 🔐 All iPhones
🚨 Important: All methods to unlock a disabled iPhone will erase all data on the device. If you don't have a backup, your photos, messages, and apps will be lost. This is a security feature - Apple cannot bypass it.

Understanding iPhone Lockouts

What happens with wrong passcode attempts:

  • 5 wrong attempts: "iPhone is disabled, try again in 1 minute"
  • 6 wrong attempts: Disabled for 5 minutes
  • 7-8 wrong attempts: Disabled for 15 minutes
  • 9 wrong attempts: Disabled for 60 minutes
  • 10 wrong attempts: "iPhone is disabled, connect to iTunes" (or auto-erases if enabled)

Method 1: Recovery Mode (Recommended)

Requirements

  • A Mac (macOS Catalina or later) or Windows PC with iTunes
  • Lightning/USB-C cable
  • Your Apple ID password (to reactivate after)

Steps

  1. Turn off your iPhone:
    • iPhone 8+: Hold Side + Volume Down, slide to power off
    • iPhone 7: Hold Side button, slide to power off
    • iPhone 6s-: Hold Side/Top button, slide to power off
  2. Connect to computer while holding button:
    • iPhone 8+: Hold Side Button while connecting
    • iPhone 7: Hold Volume Down while connecting
    • iPhone 6s-: Hold Home Button while connecting
  3. Keep holding until you see Recovery Mode screen (computer icon with cable)
  4. Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows)
  5. Click Restore when prompted (NOT Update)
  6. Wait for download and restore to complete (15-60 min depending on internet)
  7. Set up iPhone as new or restore from backup

Method 2: Erase via iCloud (Find My)

Requirements

  • Find My iPhone was enabled before lockout
  • iPhone connected to WiFi or cellular
  • Your Apple ID and password

Steps

  1. Go to icloud.com/find on any browser
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID
  3. Click All Devices and select your iPhone
  4. Click Erase iPhone
  5. Confirm and wait for erase to complete
  6. Set up iPhone as new or restore from iCloud backup
⚠️ Note: If iPhone is offline, erase will be queued and happen when it connects to internet.

Method 3: Another Apple Device (iOS 15.2+)

Requirements

  • iPhone running iOS 15.2 or later
  • iPhone connected to WiFi or cellular
  • Your Apple ID and password

Steps

  1. Keep entering wrong passcodes until you see "Erase iPhone" option at bottom
  2. Tap Erase iPhone
  3. Enter your Apple ID password
  4. iPhone will erase and restart
  5. Set up as new or restore from backup

After Erasing

You'll Need:

  • Apple ID password: Required to reactivate the phone (Activation Lock)
  • Backup: To restore your data (iCloud or computer backup)
🔒 Activation Lock: After erasing, you must sign in with the Apple ID that was on the phone. This prevents theft - even a full erase doesn't let someone else use a stolen iPhone.

Can't Remember Apple ID Password?

  1. Go to iforgot.apple.com
  2. Enter your Apple ID email
  3. Follow steps to reset password via email, security questions, or trusted device

If you can't reset your password, you'll need to go through Apple's account recovery process, which can take several days.

Preventing Future Lockouts

  • Use Face ID/Touch ID - Less chance of forgetting passcode
  • Write down your passcode in a secure location
  • Regular backups - iCloud or computer, so you don't lose data
  • Don't let kids play with locked phone - #1 cause of accidental lockouts
