Top 3 Focus Modes Worth Setting Up

Work Focus Setup (Best Productivity)

  1. Settings → Focus → +
  2. Pick 'Work' template
  3. Allowed people: only urgent (spouse, family, work emergency contacts)
  4. Allowed apps: Slack, Email, Calendar, Maps, Phone, Notes (work-related only)
  5. Hide Lock Screen + show home screen with only work apps
  6. Schedule: 9am-5pm Mon-Fri
  7. Auto-trigger: 'When at Office' (geofence)

Sleep Focus Auto-Magic

Settings → Focus → Sleep. Pre-built. Set bedtime: 11pm. Wake-up: 7am. iPhone auto-dims, ringer mutes, only Emergency Bypass contacts can call.

Apple Watch syncs — wrist alarm wakes without disturbing partner.

Custom Lock Screen Per Focus

Each Focus can have its own Lock Screen + Home Screen. Sleep mode: dim wallpaper, no widgets. Work mode: calendar widget, work apps. Personal: photos widget, social apps.

Long-press Lock Screen → Customize → 'Connect to Focus'.

Allow Time-Sensitive Notifications

Some apps (Slack, Lyft, Uber Eats, mobile bank) marked as 'Time Sensitive'. They break through Focus modes.

App-by-app: Settings → Notifications → app → 'Time Sensitive Notifications' → ON or OFF as needed.

Share Focus Status

iMessage shows: 'Eric has notifications silenced — would you like to notify anyway?' to people texting you. They can break through if urgent.

Settings → Focus → Sleep → Focus Status → ON. Tasteful — most won't break through.

Driving Focus Auto-Detects

iPhone uses motion + Bluetooth + GPS to auto-detect driving. Auto-enables Driving Focus → silences notifications + auto-replies 'I'm driving, will respond after.'

Critical for safety + legal in many states.

Hide Specific Apps in Focus

Long-press app → Edit Home Screen → drag to hide page. Or: Focus → Customize Screens → unselect Home Screen pages.

Per-Focus: hide social media in Work mode, hide email in Personal mode.

Schedule Triggers (Auto-Activate)

  • Time-based — Mon-Fri 9-5 = Work mode
  • Location-based — at gym = Workout Focus
  • App-based — open Calm = Mindfulness Focus
