Photos: Recently Deleted Album

Photos app keeps deleted photos for 30 days:

  1. Photos app → Albums tab → scroll to bottom
  2. Tap 'Recently Deleted'
  3. Authenticate with Face ID
  4. Select photos → tap 'Recover'

After 30 days, photos are gone from this album. Then check iCloud.com.

iCloud.com Photo Recovery

  1. Visit iCloud.com on any computer
  2. Sign in with Apple ID
  3. Open Photos
  4. Albums → Recently Deleted
  5. Same 30-day window applies

Contacts iCloud Web Recovery

  1. iCloud.com → Settings → scroll to 'Restore Contacts'
  2. Apple shows snapshots from previous archives
  3. Pick a date BEFORE you deleted the contact
  4. Click Restore
  5. Existing contacts merge with the restored set

This restores ALL contacts to that date — current edits since then are lost. Use carefully.

Messages — Are They Backed Up?

iMessages back up only if:

  • iCloud Messages is enabled (Settings → [Name] → iCloud → Messages on iCloud → ON)
  • OR you have an iCloud Backup that includes Messages
  • OR you have a Mac/PC backup

If neither is enabled, deleted messages are gone permanently. Enable iCloud Messages NOW to prevent future loss.

Restore from Backup (Major Loss)

If you lost LOTS of data:

  1. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings
  2. Set up iPhone fresh
  3. At Setup screen, choose Restore from iCloud Backup (or Mac backup)
  4. Pick a backup from BEFORE the data loss
  5. Wait 30 min – 2 hrs

This nukes current state and restores backup. Make sure backup has the data you need.

Third-Party Tools (Last Resort)

Tools like iMyFone D-Back, Tenorshare UltData, Dr.Fone scan iPhone storage for deleted file traces. Costs $30-100. Effectiveness:

  • Works for recently-deleted photos / messages (within days)
  • Less effective on weeks-old data
  • Requires connecting iPhone to computer
  • Some tools are scammy — only use established brands

Try free trial first — they can usually scan and tell you what's recoverable before you pay.

Prevention — Set Up Layered Backups

  • iCloud Backup ON (Settings → [Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → On)
  • iCloud Messages ON
  • iCloud Photos ON
  • iCloud+ subscription ($2.99/mo for 200GB)
  • Time Machine on a Mac for full Mac backups
  • External SSD for irreplaceable data

Two backup methods minimum. Cloud + local. The cost ($3/month) is trivial vs losing photos forever.
