Cost Breakdown — All Options
| Where | Cost | Wait | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Start | iPhone-to-iPhone | Free | Fastest, wireless |
| Wired Quick Start | Cable connection | Free | Faster on big libraries |
| iCloud Backup | From cloud | Free 5GB / iCloud+ | Need iCloud backup first |
| Finder/iTunes | Mac/PC backup | Free | Most thorough |
Method 1: Quick Start (Recommended)
- Charge BOTH iPhones to 100% (or plug both in)
- Wi-Fi + Bluetooth on for both
- Turn on new iPhone → 'Hello' screen
- Bring old iPhone close to new → 'Set Up New iPhone' card appears on old
- Tap Continue → camera on new iPhone shows blue cloud → point old iPhone camera at it
- Enter old passcode on new device
- Choose: Restore from iCloud Backup OR Wired Transfer (cable)
- Wired = 10-30 min for 100GB. iCloud = 1-3 hours.
- iPhone wakes up looking exactly like old one
Wired vs Wireless: Which?
- Wired: 5-10x faster. Need USB-C-to-Lightning (or USB-C-to-USB-C for iPhone 15+). Best for large libraries.
- Wireless: Slightly slower but reliable. No cable needed. Good for smaller libraries (under 50GB).
Method 2: iCloud Backup Restore
- Old iPhone: Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now
- Wait until backup complete (1-2 hours for big libraries)
- Set up new iPhone
- 'Restore from iCloud Backup' → sign in Apple ID → pick latest backup
- Wait 1-3 hours
- Apps re-download in background after
Method 3: Finder/iTunes Backup (Most Thorough)
For full machine backup including app data:
- Mac/PC: connect old iPhone via cable
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC)
- Click iPhone → Backups → Encrypt local backup → Back Up Now
- Wait for backup complete
- Disconnect old, connect new
- Restore from this backup
Encrypted backup includes Health, Keychain, app data — most thorough option.
After Migration: Things to Verify
- iMessage — Settings → Messages → registered with phone number?
- FaceTime — same check
- Apple Pay — re-verify cards
- Banking apps — likely require re-login
- 2FA apps (Google Auth, Authy) — verify migrated
- Voicemail — Phone → Voicemail → may need to re-set up
- Apple Watch — re-pair to new iPhone
Decommission Old iPhone
- Sign out of iCloud: Settings → Apple ID → Sign Out
- Erase All Content: Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings
- Now safe to trade in / sell / give away
