iPhone Dark Mode Not Working - Fix Guide
Dark Mode changes your iPhone's interface to a dark color scheme, reducing eye strain and saving battery on OLED screens. If it's not working or not switching automatically, here's how to fix it.
✅ Enable Dark Mode
Quick Toggle:
- Open Control Center (swipe down from top-right)
- Press and hold Brightness slider
- Tap Dark Mode button
In Settings:
- Settings → Display & Brightness
- Under Appearance, tap Dark
⏰ Automatic Switching Not Working?
- Settings → Display & Brightness
- Enable Automatic
- Tap Options
- Choose schedule:
- Sunset to Sunrise — Uses location
- Custom Schedule — Set specific times
If Sunset/Sunrise Doesn't Work:
- Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
- Scroll to System Services
- Enable System Customization
📱 Apps Not Following Dark Mode?
Some apps have their own appearance settings:
- Check app Settings for "Appearance" or "Theme"
- Set to "System" or "Automatic" to follow iPhone
- Some older apps don't support Dark Mode
Common Apps:
- Safari: Follows system automatically
- Gmail: Settings → Theme → System default
- Instagram: Follows system
- WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Theme
🔧 Troubleshooting
1. Check Smart Invert
Smart Invert is NOT the same as Dark Mode:
- Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size
- Make sure Smart Invert is OFF
- Use actual Dark Mode instead
2. Restart iPhone
- Press Side + Volume buttons
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds, turn back on
3. Check Date & Time
Automatic scheduling needs correct time:
- Settings → General → Date & Time
- Enable Set Automatically
4. Update iOS
- Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
🎨 Wallpaper Issues
Dark Mode can use different wallpapers:
- Settings → Wallpaper
- Tap current wallpaper
- Some wallpapers have Light/Dark variants
- Choose a wallpaper that supports both modes
🔄 Reset Display Settings
- Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset All Settings
- Re-enable Dark Mode after reset
This resets preferences but keeps your data.
