🛠️ DIY Rear Camera Replacement

Tools Required

  • Pentalobe P2 screwdriver
  • Tri-point Y000 screwdriver
  • Phillips #000 screwdriver
  • Suction cup
  • Plastic opening picks
  • Spudger
  • Fine-tip tweezers
  • Heat source (iOpener or hair dryer)

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Power Off & Remove Bottom Screws

Turn off your iPhone completely. Remove the two pentalobe screws on either side of the Lightning/USB-C port.

Step 2: Heat & Open Display

Heat the edges to soften adhesive. Use suction cup to lift screen slightly, then insert opening pick. Slide around edges to separate.

⚠️ Opening Direction Varies:
  • iPhone X and later: Opens from LEFT side (hinges on right)
  • iPhone 8 and earlier: Opens from RIGHT side (hinges on left)

Step 3: Disconnect Battery

Remove the battery connector bracket screws. Use spudger to disconnect battery connector. Always disconnect battery before other repairs!

Step 4: Remove Camera Bracket

Locate the rear camera module. Remove the screws securing the camera bracket/shield (usually 2-4 small screws).

Step 5: Disconnect Camera

Use spudger to carefully disconnect the camera flex cable connector. The camera module can now be lifted out.

🚨 Pro Models: iPhone 12 Pro and later have multiple cameras that may be individual modules or combined. Check your specific model before ordering parts.

Step 6: Install New Camera

Position new camera module and connect the flex cable. Replace bracket and screws. Reconnect battery.

Step 7: Test Before Sealing

Power on and test ALL cameras before resealing the phone:

  • Take photos with each lens
  • Test video recording
  • Verify autofocus works
  • Check flash functionality
  • Test Portrait mode (if applicable)

Step 8: Reseal & Reassemble

Close display, apply pressure to reseat adhesive, replace bottom screws.

🤳 Front Camera / Face ID Notes

🚨 Face ID Warning: On iPhone X and later, the front camera is part of the TrueDepth system. The Face ID components are paired to your specific iPhone. If you damage them during repair:
  • Face ID will stop working permanently
  • Only Apple can restore Face ID functionality
  • This is NOT a beginner repair

For front camera issues on Face ID phones, we strongly recommend professional repair.

🔧 Camera Lens Cover Replacement

If just the glass over your camera is cracked (but camera still works), you can replace just the lens cover:

  1. Apply heat to soften adhesive around cracked lens
  2. Carefully pry out broken glass pieces
  3. Clean the camera underneath thoroughly
  4. Apply new lens cover with adhesive
⚠️ Caution: Broken glass can fall inside and scratch the camera sensor. Work carefully and use tape to catch fragments.
