iPhone Bluetooth Not Working?
AirPods won't connect? Car stereo not pairing? Bluetooth speaker cutting out? These Bluetooth problems are usually easy to fix with a few settings tweaks.
Common Bluetooth Issues
- Won't pair: Device not in pairing mode or already paired elsewhere
- Keeps disconnecting: Range, interference, or battery issue
- No sound: Audio routing or volume issue
- Greyed out: Software glitch - restart fixes most cases
Fixes to Try
1 Toggle Bluetooth Off and On
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth
- Toggle Bluetooth OFF
- Wait 10 seconds
- Toggle back ON
2 Forget Device and Re-Pair
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth
- Find the device and tap the (i) button
- Tap Forget This Device
- Put your Bluetooth device back in pairing mode
- Re-pair from scratch
3 Restart Both Devices
Restart your iPhone:
Volume Up → Volume Down → Hold Side Button until Apple logo
Also restart/power cycle your Bluetooth device (headphones, speaker, car stereo).
4 Check Device Is in Pairing Mode
Bluetooth devices must be in pairing mode to connect to a new phone:
- AirPods: Put in case, open lid, hold button on back until light flashes white
- Beats: Hold power button until light flashes
- Speakers: Look for a Bluetooth button; hold until light blinks
- Car stereo: Check owner's manual for pairing mode
5 Check Device Battery
Low battery on Bluetooth devices causes connection issues:
- AirPods: Check battery in Control Center or Batteries widget
- Other devices: Charge fully and try again
6 Reduce Interference
Bluetooth uses 2.4GHz which can be crowded:
- Move away from WiFi routers, microwaves, USB 3.0 devices
- Stay within 30 feet of Bluetooth device
- Remove obstacles between devices (walls, metal objects)
7 Reset Network Settings
Nuclear option - resets all network and Bluetooth settings:
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings
- Enter passcode
- iPhone restarts; all Bluetooth pairings are removed
- Re-pair all your Bluetooth devices
8 Update iOS
Bluetooth bugs are occasionally fixed in updates:
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
9 Update Firmware on Accessory
Some Bluetooth devices have their own firmware updates:
- AirPods: Update automatically when connected and charging near iPhone
- Beats: Use Beats app to check for updates
- Car stereo: Check manufacturer for firmware updates
AirPods Specific Issues
If AirPods specifically won't work:
- Clean AirPods and case charging contacts
- Reset AirPods: Put in case, hold button 15 seconds until light flashes amber then white
- Remove from all devices signed into your Apple ID, then re-pair
- Check AirPods aren't already connected to another device (Mac, iPad)
When It's Hardware
If Bluetooth toggle is greyed out or nothing connects after all fixes:
- Try DFU restore first (software reset)
- If still broken, Bluetooth antenna or chip may be damaged
- This requires professional repair (often the WiFi/Bluetooth chip is combined)
Still Having Issues?
If Bluetooth problems persist after trying all these fixes, your iPhone may need professional diagnosis.
