Rule of Thirds (Composition)

Settings → Camera → Grid → ON. Adds Rule of Thirds grid in viewfinder.

Rule: place subject at intersection of lines, NOT center. More visually pleasing.

Real-world: face on right intersection, or building edge along grid line.

Golden Hour Lighting

1 hour after sunrise + 1 hour before sunset = best natural light. Warm, soft, flattering.

Worst light: midday harsh sun (high contrast, harsh shadows).

Indoor alternative: window light at any time.

Focus + Exposure Lock (Critical)

Tap subject's face/main feature → iPhone locks focus AND exposure on that.

Without tap: iPhone meters whole scene. Subject may be too dark or bright.

Drag yellow brightness slider down for: bright skies, beach, snow. Up for: shadow recovery.

Burst Mode for Action

Hold shutter button → iPhone rapid-fires 10 frames/second. Perfect for: kids, pets, sports, water.

After: Photos → Bursts album → tap → 'Select' → pick best frame. Delete rest.

Portrait Mode (Subject Focus)

Tap subject 4-8 ft away. iPhone uses depth data + AI to blur background.

Best for: people, pets, food, products. NOT for: landscapes, group >4 people.

Adjust f-stop slider after capture for more/less blur.

Use Volume Buttons as Shutter

Camera app → press Volume Up button = takes photo. More stable than touchscreen tap.

Hold AirPods Pro 2 squeeze = takes photo too (Bluetooth remote).

Live Photos (Pick Best Frame)

Default ON. iPhone records 1.5 sec before AND after shutter.

After: edit Live Photo → swipe through frames → pick the best one as the still.

Critical for action shots where timing is hard.

Night Mode (Auto)

iPhone 11+ auto-activates in dark. Yellow circle indicator with seconds.

Hold steady or use tripod for 3+ second Night Mode shots.

Slide brightness DOWN if bright lights overexposed.

Editing in Photos App

Photos → tap photo → Edit:

  • Auto enhance (magic wand) — first step always
  • Lower Highlights (-25 to -40) — recovers blown skies
  • Raise Shadows (+15 to +30) — brings back dark detail
  • Boost Vibrance (+15) — colors pop without oversaturation
  • Vignette (-10 to -20) — focuses eye on subject

ProRAW (iPhone Pro)

Settings → Camera → Formats → ProRAW. Each photo saves as 50MB DNG with full RAW data.

Edit in Lightroom Mobile / Photos / Affinity Photo. Recover MASSIVE shadow + highlight detail.

For: hero shots, low-light, landscapes, portraits.

Subject Lift (Magic Eraser Equivalent)

Long-press subject in photo → 'Lift' menu → Copy or Share. Removes background instantly.

Free Photoshop's most-loved feature in iPhone.

Lens Blur (Post-Shot Portrait)

iPhone 16+ Photos → Edit → Lens Blur. Adjust focus point + blur AFTER you took the photo.

Even non-Portrait Mode photos get pro-portrait effect.

Common Mistakes

  • Shooting from eye level (boring) — try low or high angles
  • Centering subject (less interesting) — use Rule of Thirds
  • Using flash (bad) — Night Mode is way better
  • Digital zoom (quality crashes) — move closer instead
  • Editing too much — iPhone shots need light editing

Verdict

Master: Rule of Thirds + tap focus + golden hour + Photos app editing. Covers 95% of iPhone photography needs.

Add Joby tripod ($50) + Lume Cube ($60) for next-level shots. ~$110 total accessories.
