iPhone Apple Pay Not Working - How to Fix
Apple Pay failing at checkout? Fix payment issues, NFC problems, and card errors.
💳 Fix #1: Check Your Card
Make sure your card is set up correctly:
- Open Wallet app
- Tap your card
- Check for any error messages
- Verify the card hasn't expired
- Make sure there's no hold or block from your bank
📱 Fix #2: Set Default Card
Make sure you have a default payment card:
- Settings → Wallet & Apple Pay
- Tap Default Card
- Select your preferred card
- Try the payment again
🔄 Fix #3: Remove and Re-add Card
Refresh your card connection:
- Open Wallet app
- Tap the card with issues
- Scroll down, tap Remove This Card
- Tap + to add the card again
- Complete verification with your bank
📍 Fix #4: Check Region Settings
Apple Pay must be available in your region:
- Settings → General → Language & Region
- Verify your Region supports Apple Pay
- Apple Pay is available in 70+ countries
🔒 Fix #5: Sign Into iCloud
Apple Pay requires iCloud:
- Settings → [Your Name]
- Make sure you're signed into iCloud
- If signed out, sign back in
- Re-add your cards after signing in
🔐 Fix #6: Enable Face ID/Touch ID for Payments
Biometrics must be enabled for Apple Pay:
- Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID)
- Enable Wallet & Apple Pay
- Make sure Face ID/Touch ID is working properly
📶 Fix #7: NFC Troubleshooting
Apple Pay uses NFC (Near Field Communication):
- Remove thick phone cases during payment
- Hold iPhone within 1-2 inches of terminal
- Hold until you feel vibration and see checkmark
- NFC antenna is at top of iPhone — hold that part near reader
🔄 Fix #8: Restart Your iPhone
A restart can fix temporary glitches:
- Hold Side + Volume buttons
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds
- Power on and try Apple Pay again
🏦 Fix #9: Contact Your Bank
The issue may be on your bank's end:
- Card may be blocked for security
- You may need to verify identity
- Some banks require enabling mobile payments
- Call the number on your card for help
⬆️ Fix #10: Update iOS
Software updates fix Apple Pay bugs:
- Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
- Restart and try again
⚠️ Common Error Messages
- "Card Not Supported" — Bank doesn't support Apple Pay
- "Could Not Add Card" — Try again later or contact bank
- "Payment Not Completed" — Terminal issue or hold near reader longer
- "Verification Required" — Call your bank to verify
