Alarm set but phone never rings, alarm goes off silently, or it rings once and you can't hear it? All causes covered for iPhone 11 through iPhone 16 Pro Max on iOS 17 and iOS 18.
The Ring/Silent switch does NOT silence alarms โ but your ringer volume does. Go to Settings โ Sounds & Haptics โ Ringer and Alerts slider. If it's at zero, alarms are silent even if the switch is in ring mode. Drag it up. This is the #1 cause.
Settings โ Sounds & Haptics โ Ringer and Alerts. The slider controls alarm volume directly. Make sure "Change with Buttons" is OFF for alarms โ if it's ON, you may have accidentally lowered it while adjusting media volume. Set the slider to at least 75% and test with a preview tone. This setting is completely separate from media volume.
Clock app โ Alarms โ tap the alarm โ Sound. If it shows "None," your alarm fires silently โ the screen lights up but no audio plays. Tap Sound and select any ringtone. This happens when alarms are created or edited in certain third-party apps that set the sound to None, or when synced from old iTunes backups.
Clock app โ Alarms tab. Each alarm has a green/grey toggle on the right. If it's grey, the alarm is disabled โ it won't fire regardless of the time setting. Also verify the correct days are selected: tap the alarm โ Repeat. An alarm set for "Monday" won't fire on a Tuesday. A one-time alarm with no repeat only fires once and then auto-disables.
Do Not Disturb and Focus modes DO silence alarms in iOS 15 and later โ this is a significant change from older iOS. Go to Settings โ Focus โ Do Not Disturb โ scroll to "Alarms & Timers." Make sure alarms are not suppressed. Alternatively, when setting a Focus schedule, enable "Allow Alarms" in the options. If you use Sleep Focus overnight, check Settings โ Focus โ Sleep โ during Sleep โ Allow Alarms should be ON.
If you use Apple Health's Sleep Schedule: Health app โ Browse โ Sleep โ Your Schedule โ check "Wake Up Alarm." This is a separate alarm system from the Clock app. If the Health sleep alarm is set correctly but still silent, check its volume in the Health app settings and ensure it uses a tone (not None). Note: Sleep Focus activates automatically around your bedtime and can suppress other alarms.
If your iPhone is connected to Bluetooth headphones, a car stereo, or a speaker, the alarm audio routes there โ not to your phone's speaker. If those devices are across the room or in another car, you won't hear it. Check Control Center โ long-press the audio card โ look at the playback destination. If it shows AirPods or a car name, the alarm will play there. Turn off Bluetooth before sleeping or choose a louder alarm sound that will carry.
Clock app โ Alarms โ create a test alarm for 1 minute from now โ Sound โ tap any tone to preview. If you can't hear the preview, your speaker may be blocked by a case covering the bottom speaker grille, or the speaker is damaged. Clean the speaker grille with a soft dry brush. Test with a known-working audio file through Apple Music โ if music plays fine but alarms are silent, it's a software routing issue, not hardware.
A full restart clears the Clock daemon state and audio routing cache. Hold Side + Volume Down โ slide to power off โ wait 30 seconds โ restart. After restarting, immediately verify the alarm is still enabled (restarts don't delete alarms, but worth confirming) and check the sound setting again.
Clock app โ Alarms โ swipe left on the problematic alarm โ Delete. Create a new alarm from scratch: tap the + button, set the time, select a loud ringtone (Alarm is the default and loudest), set Repeat if needed, and save. Corrupted alarm entries from iOS updates or app-created alarms occasionally fail to fire correctly โ recreating fixes it reliably.
Settings โ General โ Software Update. Apple ships alarm-related bug fixes periodically. iOS 17.4 fixed a silent alarm regression affecting certain Focus configurations. If no update helps: Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ Reset โ Reset All Settings. This resets audio routing and Focus configurations without deleting your data or apps. Recreate your alarms afterward.
If alarm previews are silent and music doesn't play through the bottom speaker, it may need cleaning or replacement. PC Medics of NJ handles speaker repairs on all iPhone models.
