iPhone 16e suddenly silent? Can't hear calls, music, or notifications? Before assuming the speaker is broken, there are at least six common non-hardware causes โ and most take under two minutes to fix. Here's how to work through them.

๐ Step 1: Check the Ring/Silent Switch
The most common cause of sudden silence on any iPhone โ the Ring/Silent switch on the left side of the phone is flipped to silent without the owner realizing it.
- Look at the small switch on the upper-left edge of the iPhone 16e
- Orange color visible = Silent Mode ON โ flip it toward the screen (upward) to enable ring
- No orange = Ring Mode โ the switch isn't the problem
It's easy to accidentally flip this switch when pulling the phone from a pocket or tight case. Check it first, every time, before anything else.
๐ Step 2: Volume and Do Not Disturb
Check volume buttons: Press the volume up button on the left side of the phone while the screen is on. Watch the volume indicator โ if it's all the way down, that's your issue.
Check ringer volume specifically: Settings โ Sounds & Haptics โ drag the Ringer and Alerts slider to the right. The ringer volume is separate from media volume โ you can have music playing at full volume but notifications completely silent.
Disable Focus / Do Not Disturb: Swipe down from the top-right corner โ check if Focus is active (moon icon or any Focus label). Focus modes silence notifications by default. Tap it to disable, or go to Settings โ Focus and turn off any active mode.
๐ต Step 3: Bluetooth Audio Routing
This is the #2 most common "iPhone has no sound" cause: audio is routing to a Bluetooth speaker, headphones, or car stereo that's still connected but not nearby โ so it sounds like the phone is silent.
- Swipe down for Control Center
- Look at the audio output icon (top-right of the music player widget, or tap the AirPlay icon)
- If it shows a Bluetooth device name instead of "iPhone" โ tap it and select iPhone
Alternatively: Settings โ Bluetooth โ find any connected device โ tap Disconnect. If sound returns immediately, a ghost Bluetooth connection was the culprit.
Common sources: AirPods left in a case near the phone, a car Bluetooth system that auto-connects, a previously paired speaker.
๐งน Step 4: Clean the Speaker Grille
The iPhone 16e has a bottom speaker grille (to the right of the USB-C port) and an earpiece speaker at the top. Lint and debris can physically block sound:
- Look at the bottom speaker grille with a flashlight โ visible debris?
- Use a soft-bristle dry brush (artist brush or dry toothbrush) to sweep across the grille โ never wet
- A short burst of compressed air angled at the grille clears trapped debris
- Do NOT use sharp objects or liquids directly in the speaker opening
After water exposure: If the phone got wet recently, liquid in the speaker grille causes muffled or absent sound. Go to Settings โ search "Water" โ tap Water Eject (or use a third-party sound-based water eject app). Leave the phone upright for a few hours.
โ๏ธ Step 5: Audio Accessibility Settings
Several accessibility settings directly affect audio output and are easy to accidentally enable:
Settings โ Accessibility โ Audio/Visual:
- Mono Audio: If this is ON and your speaker has one dead channel, you may hear nothing from certain content โ toggle it to test
- Phone Noise Cancellation: Can sometimes interfere with call audio โ toggle off if calls are silent but media works
- Balance slider: If slid all the way left or right, one speaker produces nothing โ center it
Settings โ Sounds & Haptics: Confirm "Change with Buttons" is ON โ if OFF, volume buttons don't control ringer volume and it may be stuck at zero.
๐ Step 6: Force Restart and Software Reset
Force restart: Press and quickly release Volume Up โ Volume Down โ hold Side button until Apple logo. Clears audio driver crashes that cause silent output with no hardware issue.
Update iOS: Settings โ General โ Software Update. Audio bugs in specific iOS versions are patched regularly.
Reset All Settings: Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ Reset โ Reset All Settings. Resets audio routing and accessibility settings to defaults without deleting data. Fixes persistent audio issues caused by corrupted settings.
โ ๏ธ Hardware Speaker Damage Signs
If none of the above works and the speaker was working before a drop or water exposure:
- Sound works through headphones/Bluetooth but not the built-in speaker โ speaker failed, audio output IC fine
- Distorted crackling sound instead of silence โ speaker cone damaged, often from liquid
- Earpiece works but bottom speaker doesn't (or vice versa) โ one speaker failed independently
The iPhone 16e is IP68 water resistant, but speaker damage from liquid is common and not covered under standard warranty (only AppleCare+). Speaker replacement is a common, affordable repair at third-party shops.
