iPhone 16e Face ID Not Working

🧼 Step 1: Clean the Front Camera and Sensors

Dust, screen protector residue, or fingerprints on the front cameras and infrared sensors are the #1 reason Face ID fails:

1. Get a soft, lint-free cloth (microfiber cloth works great)
2. Gently wipe the front notch area where the cameras and sensors are located
3. Pay special attention to the small sensors above the screen — they need to be crystal clear
4. Don't use liquids, alcohol, or harsh cleaners — they can damage the sensors
5. Try Face ID again immediately after cleaning

Screen protector issue? Some third-party screen protectors block infrared sensors. Try temporarily removing the protector and testing Face ID.

🎯 Step 2: Check Your Face ID Setup

Face ID might be set up incorrectly or needs to be re-trained:

1. Settings → Face ID & Passcode
2. Enter your passcode when prompted
3. Tap Delete Face ID and confirm
4. Tap Set Up Face ID
5. Hold the iPhone at face level, about 10-12 inches away
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to rotate your head in a circle slowly — do this twice (the app will guide you)
7. Once complete, tap Done and test unlocking immediately

💡 Step 3: Check Your Lighting

Poor lighting affects Face ID accuracy:

• Too dark: The infrared sensors need at least some ambient light. Try facing a light source or moving to a brighter area
• Direct sunlight in your eyes: Bright light can interfere with the infrared sensors. Move slightly to avoid direct glare in your face
• Sunglasses: Some sunglasses (especially polarized ones) block infrared. Try removing them when setting up or using Face ID
• Face mask or scarf: Covering part of your face prevents proper recognition — Face ID needs to see your whole face

📲 Step 4: Force Restart

A restart resets the Face ID system:

1. Press and quickly release Volume Up
2. Press and quickly release Volume Down
3. Hold Side Button until shutdown slider appears
4. Drag to power off, wait 10 seconds, power back on
5. After restart, immediately try Face ID — don't enter your passcode yet, just wait for the Face ID prompt

🔄 Step 5: Check for iOS Updates

Apple patches Face ID bugs regularly:

1. Settings → General → Software Update
2. If an update is available, install it
3. After updating, restart and re-set up Face ID (Step 2)

🔧 Step 6: Hardware Issues

If Face ID still won't work after cleaning and re-setup:

• Broken infrared cameras: The infrared flood illuminator or dot projector failed — requires sensor replacement
• Water damage: Moisture in the front sensor module prevents the infrared system from working — requires professional repair or replacement
• Loose front camera module: The flex cable connecting the face ID sensors to the logic board came loose — requires disassembly
• Logic board failure: The Face ID processor on the logic board is damaged

Important: Apple and authorized repair shops won't repair Face ID — they'll replace your entire display/sensor assembly. Costs range from $300-500+.
