iPhone 16 Pro Screen Flickering Fix Guide
A flickering screen on the iPhone 16 Pro is alarming, but it's often a software issue โ not a hardware failure. The 16 Pro's Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion 120Hz adds some quirks that can look like flickering. This guide helps you diagnose and fix it fast.

Step 1: Identify the Flicker Type
Before fixing anything, narrow down what kind of flickering you're seeing โ this tells you whether it's software or hardware.
- Flicker in all apps + home screen: Likely a system-level software bug, display settings issue, or hardware problem.
- Flicker in one specific app: Almost certainly a software bug in that app. Update or delete the app first.
- Flicker only at low brightness: Could be OLED PWM dimming behavior โ common and normal on OLED screens at low brightness levels.
- Green lines or persistent flickering after a drop: Hardware damage โ skip to the last section.
Step 2: Test ProMotion 120Hz Compatibility
The iPhone 16 Pro's ProMotion display dynamically adjusts between 1Hz and 120Hz. Some older or poorly optimized apps don't handle the variable refresh rate well, causing visible stuttering or flickering within those apps only.
- Go to Settings โ Accessibility โ Motion โ Limit Frame Rate.
- Toggle Limit Frame Rate on to lock the display at 60Hz.
- Use the phone for a few minutes โ if flickering stops, the issue is app-level ProMotion incompatibility.
- Check for updates to the affected app in the App Store.
- Turn Limit Frame Rate back off once you've tested โ ProMotion is worth keeping for everyday use.
Step 3: Disable True Tone
True Tone uses ambient light sensors to adjust color temperature. On some units or in certain lighting conditions, it can cause a visible pulsing or flickering effect as it continuously recalibrates.
- Go to Settings โ Display & Brightness.
- Toggle True Tone off.
- Watch the screen for 30โ60 seconds to see if flickering stops.
- If this fixes it, you can leave True Tone off or report the bug to Apple.
Step 4: Force Restart the iPhone
A stuck background process can cause display rendering issues that look exactly like hardware flickering. A force restart clears it instantly without losing data.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, then release.
- Let the phone boot fully and check if flickering is gone.
Step 5: Update iOS
Apple regularly releases display driver and software fixes. If you're on an older iOS version, a known flickering bug may already be patched.
- Go to Settings โ General โ Software Update.
- Download and install any available update.
- After updating, monitor the screen for the next hour to confirm the fix.
Step 6: Boot into Safe Mode
Safe Mode disables all third-party apps at startup. If flickering disappears in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is the culprit.
- Press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button โ when the Apple logo appears, continue holding until you see "Safe Mode" in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Use the phone in Safe Mode. No flickering? An app is causing it.
- Restart normally, then delete recently installed or updated apps one at a time to find the culprit.
Step 7: Reset Display Settings
Corrupted display calibration data can cause flickering. Resetting all settings refreshes these values without erasing your photos or apps.
- Go to Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings and enter your passcode.
- Your settings (Wi-Fi passwords, display preferences) will reset, but data is untouched.
- Reconfigure your display preferences under Settings โ Display & Brightness.
Step 8: Protect Your Screen
While you're troubleshooting, protect that OLED display โ a cracked screen protector can sometimes cause optical artifacts that look like flickering:

Signs of Hardware Damage
If flickering persists after all software steps, you may be dealing with a hardware issue:
- Green or pink vertical lines on the display
- Flickering started immediately after a drop or impact
- Half the screen is darker or has color bleed
- The display flickers only when you flex or press the phone body
- Touch response is erratic or unresponsive in areas
These signs point to a damaged display or loose display cable โ professional service required.
