iPhone 16 Pro Not Turning On
The iPhone 16 Pro features the A18 Pro chip, USB-C with USB 3, and a 6.3" Super Retina XDR OLED display. When it refuses to turn on or goes completely black, the fix is almost always software β not hardware. Here's every step, in order.
π Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- Completely black screen, no vibration: Dead battery, crashed software, or hardware fault
- Shows Apple logo then goes black, repeats: Boot loop β iOS corruption or failed update
- Vibrates when buttons pressed but screen stays black: Display issue β the phone is on but screen isn't working
- Shows low battery icon briefly then goes dark: Battery is critically drained β needs charging first
- Black screen after drop: Display connector dislodged or cracked display (can be black without visible cracks)
- Gets warm but no screen: Phone is trying to boot but can't β software or hardware fault
π Step 2: Charge the iPhone 16 Pro
A fully drained iPhone 16 Pro battery can take a minute or two to respond after being plugged in:
- Connect to a 20W or higher USB-C PD charger and cable. The included USB-C cable works, but ensure the adapter is at least 20W
- Wait 3β5 minutes before expecting any screen response. A fully dead battery needs this time before the display can turn on
- You should see a low battery icon (red/empty battery) if the charger is working
- If no icon after 5 minutes: try a different cable (USB-C passive cables charge at only 5W β use a rated PD cable), different adapter, and different wall outlet
- Inspect the USB-C port for debris with a flashlight β lint and pocket debris blocking the port is extremely common
π Step 3: Force Restart
The force restart sequence for iPhone 16 Pro clears any software crash without erasing data:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button
- Press and hold the Side button (right side) for up to 10 seconds
- Keep holding even if the screen stays dark β the Apple logo will appear when it works
- Release when you see the Apple logo. Let the phone boot fully (can take 60β90 seconds)
Repeat up to 3 times if it doesn't work the first time. Sometimes the timing needs adjustment β "quickly release" means under half a second for each volume button.
πΊ Step 4: Check If Screen Is the Issue
If the phone is actually on but the display is black:
- Listen for sounds: Plug in the charger β if you hear a charging chime, the phone is on but the screen is the problem
- Feel for vibration: Call the phone from another number β if you feel vibration, it's on and ringing
- Try Face ID: Hold the phone up and try unlocking β if the phone vibrates in response, Face ID is working and the display is the fault
- After a drop: The OLED display connector inside the iPhone 16 Pro can come loose from impact β even if the screen looks physically intact. This requires professional repair to reseat
π» Step 5: Recovery Mode Restore
If force restart doesn't work and the phone is stuck in a boot loop or completely unresponsive, Recovery Mode can reinstall iOS without erasing data (Update option) or with a full erase (Restore option):
- Connect iPhone 16 Pro to a Mac or PC with a USB-C cable
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows)
- Enter Recovery Mode on the phone:
- Press and release Volume Up
- Press and release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Side button until you see the Recovery Mode screen (connect to computer icon)
- In Finder/iTunes, click Update first β this reinstalls iOS without erasing. If Update fails, use Restore
- The process takes 10β20 minutes with a stable internet connection
π οΈ Step 6: DFU Mode (Last Software Resort)
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the deepest restore option β it bypasses the bootloader entirely:
- Connect to Mac/PC with Finder/iTunes open
- Press and release Volume Up β Volume Down
- Press and hold the Side button for exactly 3 seconds
- While still holding Side button, also press and hold Volume Down for 10 seconds
- Release the Side button but keep holding Volume Down for 5 more seconds
- The screen should remain black β if Finder/iTunes shows a device in recovery mode with a DFU indicator, you're in DFU mode
- Restore from Finder/iTunes
Warning: DFU restore erases all data. Attempt Recovery Mode (Update option) first.
π§ Step 7: Hardware Diagnosis
If all software fixes fail:
- Recent drop: The A18 Pro chip and display connectors can be dislodged by a hard impact. Professional board-level diagnosis needed
- Water exposure: iPhone 16 Pro is IP68 rated but not waterproof indefinitely. Internal corrosion from saltwater or long submersion causes board failures that prevent boot
- Battery failure: A swollen or failed battery can prevent the phone from powering on even when connected to a charger. This requires battery replacement
- Apple Diagnostics: Apple Stores can run hardware diagnostics on iPhone 16 Pro that reveal specific component failures β free of charge
β Quick Fix Checklist
- β USB-C port inspected and clear of debris
- β 20W+ PD charger and cable confirmed working
- β Charged for 5+ minutes β battery icon visible
- β Force restart performed (Vol Up β Vol Down β hold Side)
- β Phone tested for being on-but-screen-black (listen for chimes)
- β Recovery Mode tried via Finder/iTunes (Update first)
- β DFU Mode tried as last resort
π§ Still Won't Turn On?
If the iPhone 16 Pro doesn't respond to any software fix and won't enter Recovery Mode, the issue is hardware β battery, display connection, or logic board. Apple Stores offer free diagnostics. Under warranty or AppleCare+, hardware failures are covered at no cost or low cost.
