iPhone 16 Pro Not Charging
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max (September 2024) bring USB-C with USB 3 speeds (10Gbps), MagSafe at 25W, and up to 45W wired fast charging. Here's every fix when your 16 Pro won't charge.
๐ Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- No charging indicator: Cable, adapter, or dirty port
- Stuck at 80%: Optimized Battery Charging โ intentional
- MagSafe not engaging: Metal in case or alignment issue
- Charges slowly on USB-C: Passive cable or low-wattage adapter
- Charges but very hot: Thermal protection active โ normal
โก Step 2: USB-C Charging Requirements
iPhone 16 Pro supports fast charging at up to 45W with USB-C PD. Like the 15 Pro, the USB 3 port is for data speed โ charging works with any USB-C PD cable:
- Fast charging (45W): Requires a 45W+ USB-C PD adapter and a USB-C PD cable rated at 60W+
- Standard charging: Any 20W+ USB-C PD adapter + PD cable
- Passive USB-C cables: Limit to 5W regardless of adapter โ very slow charging
- MagSafe: 25W (up from 15W on 15 Pro โ biggest MagSafe upgrade in years)
๐งฒ Step 3: MagSafe Troubleshooting
- Metal cards/objects in case: Block magnetic alignment โ test MagSafe directly on bare phone back
- Thick non-MagSafe cases: Reduce inductive efficiency โ use Apple or certified MagSafe cases
- Phone getting hot on MagSafe: Titanium frame conducts heat; remove case and charge in a cooler environment
- MagSafe LED or animation not appearing: Clean back of phone and charging face of puck with dry cloth, try a different USB-C adapter powering the puck
๐งน Step 4: Clean the USB-C Port
- Power off the iPhone 16 Pro
- Use a wooden or plastic toothpick โ never metal
- Shine flashlight in โ look for debris at port back
- Gently remove, then compressed air
- Cable should seat firmly with no wobble
โ๏ธ Step 5: Optimized Battery Charging / 80% Limit
iPhone 16 Pro has two charging limit features:
- Settings โ Battery โ Battery Health & Charging โ Charging Optimization
- Optimized Charging: Holds at 80% overnight, completes based on wake schedule
- 80% Limit: New in iPhone 16 โ always charges to 80% maximum if enabled. Check this is not accidentally enabled
- To charge to 100% now: switch to "None" temporarily, or long-press charging notification โ "Charge Now"
๐ Step 6: Force Restart and iOS Update
Force restart: Volume Up โ Volume Down โ hold Side button until Apple logo.
iOS update: Settings โ General โ Software Update. iPhone 16 Pro launched with iOS 18 โ charging and MagSafe fixes arrive in point releases.
