1. Master the Camera Control Button

iPhone 16 Pro's new capacitive Camera Control button:

  • Single press — open Camera
  • Press and hold — record video
  • Light press — focus lock
  • Slide — zoom in / out
  • Double light press — settings menu (exposure, depth, focal length)

Better than tapping the screen — way more like a real camera.

2. Use ProRAW for Important Shots

Settings → Camera → Formats → toggle 'Apple ProRAW' ON. Then in Camera, tap 'RAW' icon to enable per-shot. Captures uncompressed image data for serious editing in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Files are 25MB+ each so don't use for casual shots. Use for: weddings, portraits, travel, anything you'll print or edit.

3. The 5x Telephoto Trick (Pro Max)

iPhone 16 Pro Max has 5x optical zoom (real glass). Tap '5x' in Camera. For best results:

  • Hold STILL — telephoto magnifies any shake
  • Use a tripod or stable surface for low-light tele shots
  • Combine with Action Mode if shooting video

4. Photographic Styles — Set Once, Apply Forever

Settings → Camera → Photographic Styles. Choose your preferred look:

  • Standard — neutral, natural
  • Rich Contrast — punchy colors
  • Vibrant — saturated
  • Warm — golden hour everywhere
  • Cool — bluish, modern

This applies to ALL future photos automatically. Apple's recommended: Vibrant or Rich Contrast for social media.

5. Cinematic Mode for Video

Video mode → Cinematic. Adds background blur to video, like film. Tap subjects to lock focus. Pull-focus by tapping different objects. Edit focus AFTER recording in Photos app.

6. Action Mode for Steady Walking Videos

Video mode → tap the running-person icon. Aggressive stabilization for walking, running. Slight crop on image but worth it for smooth video.

7. Macro Mode (Auto)

Get closer than ~2 inches and Camera auto-switches to Macro. Or tap macro icon to force. Great for:

  • Insects, flowers
  • Food textures
  • Watch faces, jewelry
  • Product photography

Use a tripod for sharpest macro shots — iPhone shake at this distance ruins focus.

8. Night Mode — Use a Tripod

Night mode auto-activates in low light. The longer the exposure (up to 10 sec), the brighter the photo. Holding handheld limits to ~3 sec. Use Manfrotto PIXI tripod for full 10-second night shots — milky way, city lights, etc.

9. ProRes Video for Pros

Settings → Camera → Formats → toggle Apple ProRes. Massive files (5GB per minute of 4K). Use only if you edit in Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, or Adobe Premiere. Don't waste storage on casual videos.

10. Edit RAW in Lightroom Mobile

Free Lightroom Mobile app. Open ProRAW shots → adjust exposure, highlights, shadows, color. iPhone Pro RAW gives you 14+ stops of dynamic range to work with — way more than typical iPhone photos. Real photographers use this workflow.
