iPhone 16 Overheating? How to Fix It

Is your iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, or 16 Pro Max running hot? Here's how to cool it down and fix the underlying causes of overheating.

⏱️ 5-15 min 💪 Easy 📱 iPhone 16 Series

Why Your iPhone 16 Gets Hot

  • Initial setup: Downloading apps, photos, and indexing generates heat
  • iOS updates: Background processing after updates causes temporary heat
  • Intensive apps: Gaming, video editing, or AR apps push the A18 chip hard
  • Charging: Fast charging generates heat, especially with 20W+ adapters
  • Direct sunlight: External heat plus internal processing is a bad combo
  • Poor ventilation: Thick cases trap heat
  • Background app refresh: Too many apps updating at once
Normal vs. Problematic: Warm during charging or gaming is normal. If it's too hot to hold, shows a temperature warning, or overheats during light use, there may be an issue.

Quick Fixes

1 Remove Your Case

Cases trap heat against the phone body:

  • Take off your case when the phone feels hot
  • Let it cool in a well-ventilated area (NOT in a fridge or freezer!)
  • Consider a thinner case or one with better heat dissipation

2 Stop Charging Temporarily

Charging generates heat, especially fast charging:

  • Unplug if the phone is hot and you're not in urgent need of charge
  • Avoid using the phone while charging — double heat source
  • Use a lower-wattage charger (5W) if overheating is chronic during charging

3 Close Intensive Apps

End demanding tasks that generate heat:

  1. Swipe up from the bottom and pause
  2. Swipe away games, video apps, or camera
  3. Give the phone 5-10 minutes to cool down

4 Get Out of the Sun

Direct sunlight rapidly heats up any phone:

  • Move to shade or indoors
  • Don't leave your phone in a car — temps can reach 150°F+
  • If you see the temperature warning screen, stop using it immediately
Temperature Warning: If your iPhone shows "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it," put it in a cool place and wait. Don't try to force-restart it.

Settings to Reduce Heat

5 Turn Off Background App Refresh

Reduce background processing:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh
  2. Turn it off completely, or set to Wi-Fi only
  3. Or disable it for specific apps that don't need it

6 Disable Location Services for Some Apps

Constant GPS use drains battery and generates heat:

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
  2. Review each app — change to "While Using" or "Never" where possible
  3. Keep location on for Maps and Find My, but limit others

7 Reduce Screen Brightness

The display is a major power (and heat) consumer:

  1. Swipe down from the top-right to open Control Center
  2. Lower the brightness slider
  3. Enable Auto-Brightness in Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size

8 Enable Low Power Mode

Reduces background activity significantly:

  1. Go to Settings → Battery
  2. Turn on Low Power Mode
  3. This reduces performance and background tasks, lowering heat

Software Fixes

9 Update iOS

Apple often releases fixes for thermal management:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Software Update
  2. Install any available updates
  3. The iPhone 16's thermal issues on launch were largely fixed via iOS updates

10 Restart Your iPhone

Clear background processes that may be stuck:

  1. Press and hold Side button + Volume Up/Down
  2. Slide to power off
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then press Side button to turn back on

11 Reset All Settings

If overheating persists with no clear cause:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Tap Reset → Reset All Settings
  3. This won't delete data but will reset preferences

Still Overheating?

If your iPhone 16 overheats during normal use (not gaming, not charging, not in sunlight), there may be a hardware defect. This could be a battery issue or internal component problem.

Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store if the phone is under warranty.
