iPhone 16 Not Turning On
The iPhone 16 (2024) introduced the A18 chip, Camera Control button, USB-C charging, and Action Button β all on a 3,561 mAh battery. When your iPhone 16 won't turn on or shows a black screen, you can fix most causes yourself in under 30 minutes. Work through these steps in order before heading to a repair shop.
π Step 1: Identify Your Symptom
- Completely black screen, no response: Dead battery or software freeze
- Apple logo appears then phone shuts off repeatedly: Boot loop β software corruption or failed iOS update
- Screen stays dark but phone vibrates or plays sounds: Phone is on β display cable issue
- Low battery icon flashes briefly then dark: Critically drained β needs charging immediately
- Dark after drop or water exposure: Physical hardware damage
- Action Button triggering unexpectedly: May be interrupting boot β hold Volume Down + Side to dismiss
π Step 2: Charge with USB-C
iPhone 16 uses USB-C (not Lightning). Check these first:
- Use a USB-C cable rated for 27W or higher with at least a 20W USB-C power adapter. The stock Apple 20W adapter works fine
- Inspect the USB-C port with a flashlight. Lint and debris pack inside and block charging. Use a wooden toothpick or SIM ejector tool to gently clear it β do not use metal
- Plug in and wait at least 5 minutes before pressing any buttons. A fully dead battery can take several minutes to charge enough to display anything
- You should see the low battery charging screen (large battery outline with red fill). No response after 5 minutes = try a different cable and adapter
- iPhone 16 also supports MagSafe at 25W (with iPhone 16 charger) and Qi2 at 15W, but always use wired USB-C to revive a dead phone
π Step 3: Force Restart
Force restart clears software crashes and freezes without deleting any data:
- Press and quickly release Volume Up button
- Press and quickly release Volume Down button
- Press and hold the Side (Power) button
- Keep holding Side button through the "slide to power off" slider β do not release
- The Apple logo will appear after 10β15 seconds. Release and wait for the phone to boot (60β90 seconds)
Tip: The Volume Up and Volume Down presses must be fast (tap, don't hold). If nothing happens after 15 seconds, repeat from step 1. It sometimes takes 2β3 attempts.
π Step 4: Is the Screen Dark But the Phone Is On?
Sometimes the phone is running normally but the display has failed. Test this before assuming the phone is dead:
- Plug in charger β listen for the USB-C connection chime. If you hear it, the phone is on
- Call your iPhone from another phone β if it vibrates or rings, it's powered on
- Hold the phone up and try Face ID β if you feel a haptic buzz for the lock screen, the display cable has come loose (common after a drop)
- Shine a bright flashlight at an angle on the screen β you may see dim images if the backlight is broken but display is intact
If the phone is on with a dark screen, this is a hardware repair β the OLED flex cable or display assembly needs reseating or replacement.
π» Step 5: Recovery Mode Restore
If force restart doesn't help, Recovery Mode reinstalls iOS while preserving your data (Update option):
- Connect iPhone 16 to a Mac using a USB-C cable (use Finder) or to a PC (use iTunes)
- Enter Recovery Mode:
- Press and release Volume Up
- Press and release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Side button until you see the Recovery screen (cable + laptop icon)
- In Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC): choose Update β this reinstalls iOS 18 without wiping your data
- If Update fails or phone still doesn't respond: choose Restore β this erases the device but fixes deep software corruption
- After restore, set up from iCloud backup to get your data back
π οΈ Step 6: DFU Mode (Last Software Resort)
Device Firmware Update mode does a deeper restore than Recovery Mode. Use this only after Recovery fails:
- Connect to Mac (Finder) or PC (iTunes) via USB-C
- Press and release Volume Up
- Press and release Volume Down
- Hold Side button for 3 seconds
- While holding Side button, also hold Volume Down for 10 seconds
- Release Side button but keep Volume Down held for 5 more seconds
- Screen stays completely black β Finder/iTunes shows "iPhone in recovery mode"
- Choose Restore in Finder/iTunes
Warning: DFU restore erases all data. Always try Recovery Mode Update first.
β Quick Fix Checklist
- β USB-C port cleared of lint and debris
- β 20W+ wired USB-C charger confirmed working
- β Charged 5+ minutes β low battery icon visible
- β Force restart performed (Vol Up β Vol Down β hold Side 10+ sec)
- β Tested if phone is on with dark screen (listen for chime, call it)
- β Recovery Mode Update tried via Finder/iTunes
- β DFU restore attempted as last resort
π§ Still Won't Turn On?
If none of these steps work, the iPhone 16 likely has a hardware failure β most commonly a swollen or failed battery, damaged power management IC, or a display assembly issue from a drop. Apple's Genius Bar offers free diagnostics, or an independent repair shop can replace the battery for $40β70.
