How to Know It's Actually Time

Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. You're looking at three numbers:

  • Maximum Capacity: Below 80% means Apple will replace the battery. Below 90% you'll feel it but it's borderline.
  • Cycle Count: The iPhone 16 series is rated for 1,000 cycles to 80% capacity (up from 500 on iPhone 14 and earlier). Most users hit 80% capacity around 1,200 cycles in real use.
  • Peak Performance Capability: If you see "Service Recommended" or "your battery has been throttled," that's iOS protecting the chip from voltage drops. Replacement restores full performance.

If you're at 88% capacity with no shutdown messages, you don't need a battery — you need to wait six more months.

The "Service" Warning After a Third-Party Battery

Apple verifies battery authenticity via a chip in the genuine cell. If a shop installs a non-genuine battery, iOS shows "Important Battery Message — Unable to Verify This iPhone Has a Genuine Apple Battery" in the Battery Health menu. The phone still works, but:

  • You won't see Maximum Capacity percentage
  • Peak Performance Capability is hidden
  • Future iOS updates may further restrict third-party battery features

Apple-authorized Independent Repair Providers (IRPs) can install genuine batteries with the chip intact and avoid this warning. Always ask: "Are you on the IRP program?"

Charging Habits That Double Battery Lifespan

  • Use Optimized Battery Charging (on by default in iOS 18). It learns your routine and pauses charging at 80% overnight.
  • Stop fast-charging when you don't need it. A 5W charger overnight is gentler than a 30W charger in 30 minutes.
  • Avoid heat. Don't leave the phone in a hot car or on a wireless pad inside a thick case — heat is the #1 cycle killer.
  • Don't drain to 0%. Keep it between 20% and 80% if you can. Lithium-ion hates the extremes.
  • Buy MFi-certified cables. Cheap counterfeits push wrong voltage and cook the cell over months.
