iPhone 15 Pro Not Turning On
The iPhone 15 Pro was Apple's first Pro model with USB-C, replacing Lightning. It also introduced the titanium frame and Action Button. When it won't turn on or shows a black screen, the cause is almost always fixable in minutes β here's every step in order.
π Step 1: Identify What's Happening
- Completely black, no response to buttons: Dead battery, software crash, or hardware fault
- Apple logo appears then goes black repeatedly: Boot loop β iOS corruption or failed update
- Vibrates when buttons pressed but screen stays black: Phone is on but display connector issue
- Red/empty battery icon briefly appears: Battery critically drained β charge first
- Gets warm but won't boot: Software crash or hardware fault β force restart needed
- Black after a drop or water exposure: Physical damage to display or internals
π Step 2: Charge via USB-C
The iPhone 15 Pro was the first Pro to drop Lightning for USB-C. This introduces new charging considerations:
- Use a USB-C PD charger at 20W or higher β the included USB-C cable supports fast charging but you need a compatible adapter
- Inspect the USB-C port with a flashlight β lint compaction is common with USB-C ports. Use a wooden toothpick to carefully remove debris
- Wait 3β5 minutes after connecting before expecting a screen response. A fully depleted battery needs this time
- You should see a low battery icon or charging animation. If nothing after 5 minutes, try: different cable, different adapter, different wall outlet
- Passive USB-C cables charge at only 5W regardless of the adapter β use a rated PD cable for reliable charging
- MagSafe does NOT work on iPhone 15 Pro for charging from dead (the phone needs some power to initialize wireless charging) β use wired USB-C to revive a dead phone
π Step 3: Force Restart iPhone 15 Pro
A force restart clears software crashes without erasing any data:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button
- Press and hold the Side button on the right side for up to 10 seconds
- Keep holding even if nothing seems to happen β the Apple logo will appear when it works
- Release when you see the Apple logo. Let the phone boot fully (60β90 seconds)
Repeat up to 3 times β timing matters. Each volume press should be quick (under half a second), then hold Side firmly.
πΊ Step 4: Is the Screen the Problem?
Sometimes the iPhone 15 Pro is running fine but the display isn't showing anything:
- Connect to charger β if you hear the charging chime sound, the phone is on and the display is the issue
- Call from another phone β if your iPhone 15 Pro vibrates, it's on and receiving calls
- Check for Face ID response β hold up the phone and try to unlock. If it vibrates and unlocks (even with black screen), the display connector is dislodged
- After a drop, the OLED display flex cable connector inside can come loose from the logic board β this requires professional repair to reseat, even if the glass looks fine
π» Step 5: Recovery Mode Restore
For boot loops or complete unresponsiveness that force restart doesn't fix:
- Connect iPhone 15 Pro to a Mac or PC using a USB-C to USB-C cable (or USB-C to USB-A with adapter)
- Open Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows
- Enter Recovery Mode:
- Press and release Volume Up β Volume Down β hold Side button until the Recovery screen appears (USB cable + laptop icon)
- In Finder/iTunes: click Update first β reinstalls iOS without erasing your data
- If Update fails after two attempts, click Restore β this erases the device but fixes persistent software corruption
π οΈ Step 6: DFU Mode
DFU (Device Firmware Update) is the deepest restore method, bypassing the iOS bootloader:
- Connect to Mac/PC with Finder/iTunes open
- Press and release Volume Up β Volume Down
- Hold Side button for 3 seconds
- While still holding Side, also hold Volume Down for 10 seconds
- Release Side but keep Volume Down for 5 more seconds
- Screen stays completely black β Finder/iTunes should detect a device in recovery
- Restore from Finder/iTunes
Note: DFU restore erases all data. Try Recovery Mode Update option first.
β οΈ Step 7: Titanium Frame Heating Note
The iPhone 15 Pro titanium frame is an excellent heat conductor β the phone can feel uncomfortably hot during intensive charging or tasks. If thermal protection activates, the phone may appear unresponsive:
- If the phone is very hot, disconnect from charger and place on a cool, hard surface for 10β15 minutes
- Then attempt force restart
- A temperature warning screen (black screen with thermometer icon) means the phone is too hot to operate β cool it down first
β Quick Fix Checklist
- β USB-C port cleared of debris
- β PD-rated USB-C charger and cable confirmed working
- β Charged 5+ minutes β battery/charging icon visible
- β Force restart completed (Vol Up β Vol Down β hold Side)
- β Checked if phone is on-but-screen-black (listen for chimes)
- β Recovery Mode Update tried via Finder/iTunes
- β Not overheating β cooled to room temp if needed
π§ Still Won't Turn On?
If the iPhone 15 Pro doesn't respond to any software fix, the issue is hardware β battery failure, display connection, or logic board. Apple Stores offer free diagnostics. Under Apple's 1-year warranty or AppleCare+, hardware failures are covered at no or low cost.
