iPhone 15 Pro Not Charging
iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max (September 2023) were the first iPhones with USB-C and USB 3 (10Gbps) data speeds โ introducing new cable compatibility questions for charging. Here's every fix when your 15 Pro won't charge.
๐ Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- No charging indicator when plugged in: Cable, adapter, or dirty port
- Stopped at 80%: Optimized Battery Charging โ intentional
- MagSafe not working but USB-C works: MagSafe case/alignment issue
- USB-C charges but very slowly: Passive cable or low-wattage adapter
- Phone gets very hot while charging: Thermal protection โ iOS limits charging when too hot
๐ก Step 2: USB-C vs USB 3 Cable Confusion
iPhone 15 Pro has a USB 3 (10Gbps) port โ but this only matters for data transfer. For charging, any USB-C PD cable works:
- For charging: Any USB-C cable with Power Delivery support works fine
- For USB 3 data speeds (video transfer, etc.): Requires a USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt cable โ the cable included in the box is one of these
- Common confusion: People buy USB 3 cables for data and use cheap passive cables for charging โ the passive cable limits to 5W, causing very slow charging
- Recommended: 20W+ USB-C PD adapter with a PD-rated cable for normal charging; 27W PD for fast charging
๐ฅ Step 3: Heat and Thermal Charging Limits
iPhone 15 Pro was notably reported to run warm โ Apple fixed the worst of it in iOS 17.0.3, but the titanium frame conducts heat differently than aluminum:
- Remove the case when charging โ cases trap heat and can trigger thermal limiting
- Don't use the phone intensively while fast charging โ gaming or video streaming while charging generates significant heat
- Charge in a cool environment โ charging at room temperature (20-22ยฐC) vs a warm room (28ยฐC+) makes a real difference
- If charging slows dramatically after 15-20 minutes, thermal protection is active โ this is normal and protects the battery
๐งฒ Step 4: MagSafe Troubleshooting
- Metal cards or objects in case interfere with magnetic alignment โ remove case and test
- iPhone 15 Pro MagSafe charges at 15W (standard) โ same as iPhone 14 Pro, unchanged from the 25W bump in iPhone 16
- Clean back of phone and charging face of puck with dry cloth
- If MagSafe snaps but doesn't charge: try a different MagSafe puck or USB-C adapter powering it
๐งน Step 5: Clean the USB-C Port
- Power off the iPhone 15 Pro
- Use a wooden or plastic toothpick
- Inspect with flashlight โ debris at port back
- Gently remove, then compressed air
- Cable should seat firmly with no wobble
โ๏ธ Step 6: Optimized Battery Charging
- Settings โ Battery โ Battery Health & Charging โ Optimized Battery Charging
- Stopped at 80% = this feature is active. Disable temporarily or let it complete naturally
- Long-press the charging notification โ "Charge Now" to override without fully disabling
๐ Step 7: Force Restart and iOS Update
Force restart: Volume Up โ Volume Down โ hold Side button until Apple logo.
iOS update: Settings โ General โ Software Update. iOS 17.0.3 specifically addressed heat/charging issues on iPhone 15 Pro โ if you're on an older version, update now.
