iPhone 13 Not Charging

iPhone 13 won't charge, charges slowly, or keeps disconnecting? The culprit is usually the Lightning port, the cable, or a software glitch โ€” all fixable without a repair shop. Here's every fix in order.

๐Ÿ” Step 1: Identify the Charging Problem

  • No response at all when plugged in: Cable, adapter, port, or deeply depleted battery
  • Charges very slowly: Low-wattage charger, USB hub, or background drain exceeding charge rate
  • Charges fine then stops: Thermal protection or loose port
  • "This accessory may not be supported" alert: Non-certified cable โ€” swap immediately
  • MagSafe not attaching or not charging: Case blocking magnet, or MagSafe puck issue
  • Lightning port makes crackling noise: Moisture detected โ€” do not charge, let dry

๐Ÿ”Œ Step 2: Test Cable and Adapter

Most iPhone 13 charging issues are cable or adapter failures, not the phone itself:

  1. Try a different Lightning cable โ€” cables fail internally with no visible damage
  2. Try a different power adapter โ€” minimum 5W, but 20W USB-C PD charges fastest
  3. Try a different power outlet โ€” rule out the outlet itself
  4. Plug directly into a wall adapter โ€” avoid USB hubs, computers, and car chargers for diagnosis
  5. Confirm the cable is MFi-certified โ€” non-certified cables often cause intermittent charging or the "not supported" popup

๐Ÿงน Step 3: Clean the Lightning Port

Lint and debris from pockets compacts into the Lightning port over time, preventing the connector from seating fully โ€” a very common cause of "not charging" on iPhones 2+ years old:

  1. Power off the iPhone before cleaning
  2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick โ€” never metal
  3. Shine a flashlight into the port and look for lint packed at the back
  4. Very gently scrape along the bottom and sides of the port โ€” you'll often pull out a compressed plug of lint
  5. Follow up with a quick burst of compressed air to clear loose debris
  6. Plug in the cable again โ€” it should seat with a satisfying click

This fix works surprisingly often. If the cable now clicks in firmly but didn't before, lint was the entire problem.

๐Ÿ’ง Step 4: Moisture Warning

The iPhone 13 detects liquid in the Lightning port and blocks charging to prevent damage. If you see a liquid detection alert:

  • Do NOT force charge โ€” you can permanently damage the port
  • Tap the port gently on your palm to dislodge water
  • Leave in a dry, well-ventilated area for at least 30 minutes โ€” ideally a few hours
  • Do not use rice (it doesn't work and can introduce starch debris)
  • Once dry, try charging again

In emergencies only, you can override the moisture warning in the alert to charge anyway โ€” but do so at your own risk.

๐Ÿ”„ Step 5: Force Restart

A software crash can freeze the charging subsystem โ€” the phone won't respond to a charger even though it's physically fine:

  1. Quickly press and release Volume Up
  2. Quickly press and release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds)
  4. Release and let the phone boot
  5. Plug in charger โ€” the lightning bolt should now appear

โšก Step 6: Optimized Battery Charging

The iPhone 13 has Optimized Battery Charging enabled by default. It learns your schedule and holds charging at 80% overnight, completing to 100% just before your typical wake time. This can look like "not charging" if you plug in at an unusual time:

  1. Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health & Charging
  2. Toggle Optimized Battery Charging โ€” or leave on and trust it will reach 100% before you need it
  3. Also disable Clean Energy Charging if your iPhone is holding at 80% unexpectedly

๐Ÿ“ฒ Step 7: Update iOS

Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update. Charging firmware bugs have been fixed in iOS point releases โ€” including issues affecting MagSafe and wired charging behavior on iPhone 13 models.

๐Ÿ”‹ Step 8: Check Battery Health

At 3+ years old, iPhone 13 batteries may be degraded enough to report charging issues:

  1. Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health & Charging
  2. If capacity is under 80% or condition says "Service Recommended" โ€” battery replacement will resolve slow charging and short run time simultaneously
