iPhone 11 Charging Port Replacement

Step 1: Power Off & Back Up Your Data

Completely power down your iPhone 11. Go to Settings → General → Shut Down and follow the prompts. While charging issues shouldn't affect data, having a recent backup is always prudent. Back up to iCloud or your computer using iTunes/Finder before starting.

Step 2: Remove Bottom Pentalobe Screws

Your iPhone 11 has two pentalobe screws on either side of the Lightning port at the bottom of the device. Use a P2 pentalobe screwdriver to remove these. Keep them somewhere safe—they're crucial for water resistance. These screws are the only things holding the display frame in place, so removing them is essential for display separation.

Step 3: Heat the Display Edges

The LCD display is sealed with strong adhesive around all four edges. Use a heat gun or hair dryer on medium heat, working systematically around the perimeter. Spend about 1-2 minutes on each edge (bottom, right, left, top). The goal is to soften the adhesive slightly without damaging the display or internal components.

Step 4: Create Initial Display Gap with Suction Cup

Once heated, apply a suction cup to the bottom center of the display. Pull upward with steady, consistent pressure. You'll feel the adhesive break and hear a subtle pop as the gap forms. This is normal. Once you have a gap, don't separate the display fully yet—it's still connected by cables.

Step 5: Insert Plastic Opening Picks

Starting at the bottom where you created the initial gap, carefully insert plastic opening picks. Slide them along the edges to maintain the opening. Work your way up the left side, then continue around the right side. The display connector cables are on the right side near the top, so be especially careful not to apply pressure there initially.

Step 6: Open Display Like a Book

Once you've loosened the adhesive around three sides, gently lift the bottom of the display and open it upward. Prop it at about 90 degrees—essentially opening it like a book. Don't fully separate it yet because the ribbon cables connecting the display to the logic board are still attached. You need these cables to remain connected to test the phone after repair.

Step 7: Disconnect the Battery

Before working with any internal components, disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits. The battery connector is typically located near the center-left of the logic board. You'll see a small bracket holding a ribbon cable. Remove 1-2 small screws securing the bracket and carefully lift the connector straight up using a plastic spudger. Never force it or yank on the cable.

Step 8: Locate & Disconnect the Charging Port Flex Cable

The charging port assembly is connected to the logic board via a flex cable that's soldered to a connector. The flex cable runs from the Lightning port area toward the logic board. Look for where it connects to the main board—you'll see a small black connector. Carefully disconnect this by gently lifting the connector straight up with a plastic spudger. Don't bend or fold the flex cable.

Step 9: Remove Screws Holding Charging Port Assembly

The charging port flex cable is held in place by 1-2 small metal brackets with screws. Use your tri-point Y000 or Phillips screwdriver to remove these carefully. Keep these screws organized—you'll need them for reassembly. Some screws may be very small, so use a magnetic screwdriver if possible.

Step 10: Extract the Old Charging Port Flex Cable

Once all brackets are removed and the connector is disconnected, you can carefully extract the entire charging port assembly. It may be stuck with a bit of adhesive, so gently wiggle it while pulling. Don't force it suddenly or you'll tear the flex cable. Set the old assembly aside—it's no longer needed.

Step 11: Clean the Port Cavity

Before installing the new charging port, remove any remaining adhesive or debris from the cavity where the old port sat. Use a plastic spudger to gently scrape away old adhesive residue. The surface should be clean and smooth for the new port to seat properly. If there's corrosion or water damage visible, clean it gently with a cotton swab and 90% isopropyl alcohol. Allow to air dry completely.

Step 12: Install the New Charging Port Assembly

Carefully position the new charging port flex cable into the cavity, aligning it exactly as the old one was positioned. The Lightning port should be facing outward toward the bottom of the phone, and the flex cable should lay flat without twists or kinks. If the new part includes adhesive backing, press it firmly in place. If not, you may need to add a small amount of adhesive or use the original mounting bracket.

Step 13: Reconnect the Charging Port Connector

Take the flex cable connector and carefully align it with the connector on the logic board. Push down firmly and straight until you hear or feel a click. The connector should be fully seated—a loose connection means no charging. Verify it's secure before proceeding.

Step 14: Replace the Mounting Bracket Screws

Replace the 1-2 small screws that hold the charging port assembly in place. Tighten snugly but don't over-tighten—you can crack the delicate logic board. These screws should be finger-tight plus a quarter turn with your screwdriver.

Step 15: Reconnect the Battery

Reconnect the battery connector by aligning it with the battery connector on the logic board and pressing down firmly until it clicks. This is critical—without a solid battery connection, your phone won't power on. Verify it's completely seated before moving forward.

Step 16: Test Before Sealing (Critical Step!)

Before permanently closing up your phone, power it on and test the charging port while the display is still propped open. Plug in your Lightning cable and verify:

• Device shows charging indicator
• Charging percentage increases
• No "Accessory not supported" error
• Connection is solid (doesn't require awkward angle)
• Display image looks correct
• Touch input responsive

If anything is wrong, disconnect power immediately and troubleshoot before closing.

Step 17: Apply Fresh Display Adhesive

Once testing confirms everything works, power down the device. Now you need to re-seal the display. Apply fresh adhesive strips around the perimeter. Most quality kits include pre-cut adhesive strips sized for iPhone 11. Start at the bottom and work your way around, pressing each strip firmly into place. Don't stretch them excessively—they should lay flat and natural.

Step 18: Close the Display

Gently lower the display back into place, starting with the top. Press downward slowly and deliberately, working from top to bottom to avoid trapping air bubbles. Once the display is fully seated, press firmly around all edges for 10-15 seconds per section. The display should sit perfectly flush with the frame—no gaps, bumps, or bulges.

Step 19: Replace Bottom Pentalobe Screws

Replace the two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the device beside the Lightning port. Tighten securely—these screws are critical for maintaining water resistance. Don't over-tighten to the point of stripping, but they should be snug.

Step 20: Final Testing & Verification

Power on your iPhone 11 and perform a complete charging test:

• ✅ Device powers on normally
• ✅ Charging cable connects firmly (not loose)
• ✅ Charging percentage increases (not just showing "charging" with no increase)
• ✅ No heat from the charging port
• ✅ No burning smell or unusual sounds
