π Why iPads Get Stuck on the Apple Logo
- Failed iPadOS update: If the iPad lost power or WiFi during an over-the-air update, the operating system is left in a partially installed state and cannot boot.
- Corrupted storage or full disk: When internal storage is nearly full (under 1GB free), iPadOS may not have enough room to complete boot operations, resulting in a loop.
- Failed data migration: If a device-to-device transfer or iCloud restore was interrupted, the iPad can get stuck waiting for data that never arrives.
- Hardware failure: A failing NAND storage chip, damaged logic board, swollen battery, or faulty charging port can all prevent the iPad from completing its boot sequence.
- Accessory or peripheral conflict: In rare cases, a connected keyboard, hub, or external drive can interfere with boot β disconnect all accessories before troubleshooting.
π§ Fix 1: Force Restart (By iPad Model)
A force restart cuts power to the processor and forces a cold reboot. This is the first thing to try and fixes most temporary boot loops.
iPads WITHOUT a Home Button (iPad Pro 2018+, iPad Air 4+, iPad Mini 6+, iPad 10th gen)
These are all iPads with Face ID or Touch ID in the top button, and a USB-C port.
- Quickly press and release the Volume button closest to the Top button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume button farthest from the Top button.
- Press and hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears (about 10β15 seconds).
- Release the Top button when you see the Apple logo β the iPad will attempt to boot normally.
iPads WITH a Home Button (iPad 9th gen and earlier, iPad Air 3 and earlier, iPad Mini 5 and earlier, all iPads with Lightning)
- Press and hold the Home button and the Top (power) button simultaneously.
- Keep holding both buttons for about 10β15 seconds.
- Release when you see the Apple logo appear.
- Wait for the iPad to complete its boot β this may take 1β2 minutes.
If the iPad boots successfully, immediately go to Settings β General β Software Update and install any pending updates. Also check Settings β General β iPad Storage and free up space if you are under 3GB.
π§ Fix 2: Recovery Mode + Update via Computer
If force restart did not work, recovery mode allows you to reinstall iPadOS from a computer. Try the "Update" option first to preserve your data.
Step 1: Connect to Your Computer
- Use a USB cable to connect your iPad to a Mac or Windows PC.
- Open Finder (macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes (Windows or older macOS).
- Make sure the computer is connected to the internet for the iPadOS download.
Step 2: Enter Recovery Mode
iPads WITHOUT a Home button (USB-C iPads):
- Quickly press and release the Volume button closest to the Top button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume button farthest from the Top button.
- Press and hold the Top button β do NOT release when you see the Apple logo.
- Keep holding until the recovery mode screen appears (a cable pointing to a computer icon). This takes about 15β20 seconds.
iPads WITH a Home button (Lightning iPads):
- Press and hold the Home button and the Top button simultaneously.
- Keep holding past the Apple logo β do not release.
- Continue holding until the recovery mode screen appears (cable pointing to computer icon).
Step 3: Update or Restore
- Your computer will detect the iPad in recovery mode and present two options: Update and Restore.
- Choose Update first β this downloads and reinstalls iPadOS while keeping all your data, apps, and settings.
- The download and installation takes 15β45 minutes depending on your internet speed and iPad model.
- If Update fails or the boot loop returns, re-enter recovery mode and choose Restore. Warning: Restore erases everything on the iPad.
π§ Fix 3: DFU Mode Restore (Last Resort)
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the deepest level of restore. It completely rewrites the firmware and operating system. Use this only if recovery mode failed.
DFU Mode for iPads WITHOUT a Home Button
- Connect the iPad to your computer and open Finder or iTunes.
- Quickly press and release the Volume button closest to the Top button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume button farthest from the Top button.
- Press and hold the Top button for 10 seconds.
- While still holding the Top button, also press and hold the Volume Down button for 5 seconds.
- Release the Top button but keep holding Volume Down for another 10 seconds.
- The screen must remain completely black β if you see the Apple logo or recovery mode screen, start over.
- Your computer will detect a device in recovery/DFU mode and prompt you to Restore.
DFU Mode for iPads WITH a Home Button
- Connect the iPad to your computer and open Finder or iTunes.
- Press and hold the Top button and the Home button simultaneously for 10 seconds.
- After 10 seconds, release the Top button but keep holding the Home button for another 10 seconds.
- The screen must remain completely black.
- Your computer will display a message that it has detected an iPad in recovery mode β click Restore.
After DFU detection: Click Restore in Finder/iTunes. The computer downloads a fresh copy of iPadOS and installs it from scratch. All data will be erased, but you can restore from an iCloud or computer backup after the iPad is working again.
β οΈ When It Is a Hardware Problem
- Boot loop persists after DFU restore: The NAND flash storage is likely failing β this requires board-level micro-soldering repair.
- iPad gets extremely hot during the boot loop β possible short circuit on the logic board, especially common after liquid damage.
- Screen flickers or shows lines during boot β this indicates a display connection or GPU issue, not just a software boot loop.
- Boot loop started after a drop: Internal connector damage can cause intermittent power delivery that prevents successful boot.
- Swollen battery pushing the screen up: A swollen battery can cause intermittent power issues. Do not continue charging β seek professional help immediately.
Recommended: MFi-certified iPad cables on Amazon β a damaged or cheap cable can cause restore failures that look like hardware problems.
π Need Professional Help?
If your iPad is still stuck after DFU mode, board-level repair is likely needed. Continuing to attempt restores at this point will not help and may make data recovery harder.
