iPad Screen Not Rotating? 8 Fixes for All Models

iPad stuck in portrait or landscape and won't rotate when you turn it? Usually takes less than a minute to fix. Here's every cause and fix for iPadOS 17 and iPadOS 18 on all iPad models.

⚡ Fix in 10 Seconds

Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center. Look for the rotation lock icon — a padlock with a circular arrow. If it's highlighted (white/active), tap it to disable rotation lock. That's it. This is the cause 90% of the time.

Rotation Lock

1Disable rotation lock in Control Center

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen (on newer iPads with Face ID) or swipe up from the bottom (on older iPads with a Home button) to open Control Center. The rotation lock icon looks like a padlock with a circular arrow around it. If the icon appears white or highlighted, rotation is locked — tap it once to unlock. The icon will darken/deactivate, and your iPad will rotate freely again.

2Check the side switch (older iPad models)

iPad 2 through iPad Air 1 and iPad mini 1-3 have a physical side switch above the volume buttons. By default, this switch locks rotation. If it's pushed toward the back of the device, rotation is locked regardless of the Control Center setting. Push it toward the screen to unlock. (Note: this switch can be reassigned to mute in Settings → General → Use Side Switch to — if it's set to Mute, rotation is controlled only from Control Center.)

App & System Fixes

3Check if the specific app supports rotation

Not all apps support both orientations. Many iPhone apps running on iPad (in compatibility mode) only support portrait. Some video apps lock to landscape during playback. If rotation works in Safari or Photos but not in a specific app, the app itself doesn't support that orientation — this isn't an iPad bug. Check the App Store listing or the app's settings for rotation options.

4Restart the iPad

Hold the top button + volume button → slide to power off (Face ID iPads) or hold just the top button (Home button iPads). Wait 30 seconds and restart. This resets the accelerometer/gyroscope daemon and rotation lock state. Rotation issues after an iPadOS update are often resolved by a simple restart.

5Check Display & Brightness settings

Settings → Display & Brightness. On iPads running iPadOS 16+, check if there's a "Lock Rotation" option here as well (visible on some models). More importantly, check the "Home Screen" orientation setting if it appears — on iPad Air M1 and later, this controls whether the Home Screen rotates, which can be set independently of app rotation.

⚠️ Some apps deliberately disable rotation: Games, video players, and presentation apps often lock orientation intentionally. If you're in a full-screen app and want to test real rotation behavior, exit to the Home screen — the Home screen rotates freely on all iPads that support landscape. If the Home screen won't rotate even with rotation lock off, there's a deeper software issue.
6Update iPadOS

Settings → General → Software Update. Certain iPadOS versions have shipped with accelerometer bugs that affect auto-rotation. iPadOS 17.3 fixed a rotation regression introduced in 17.2. If your rotation stopped working after an update, check for a newer version — Apple typically patches these quickly.

7Reset All Settings

Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Reset → Reset All Settings. This doesn't delete your data or apps but resets all system preferences including display settings, accessibility options, and rotation lock state. After resetting, test rotation before reconfiguring anything — this isolates whether a setting change caused the issue.

8Accelerometer hardware test

If rotation doesn't work after all software fixes and a full restore, the accelerometer/gyroscope chip may have failed — usually from a drop or liquid damage. Test: open the Compass app and tilt the iPad in all directions. If the compass reading doesn't change as you tilt, the motion sensors are dead. Open a level app and tilt — if the bubble doesn't move, confirmed hardware failure. Accelerometer repair requires logic board service.

✅ iPad with keyboard case: Smart Keyboard Folio, Magic Keyboard, and third-party keyboard cases with a built-in stand sometimes lock the iPad orientation to landscape when attached. This is by design — the keyboard assumes landscape. Detaching the keyboard (or folding it away from Smart Folio position) re-enables free rotation.

Accelerometer hardware failure?

If rotation won't work after a full restore and the Compass app shows no movement, it's a hardware issue. PC Medics of NJ diagnoses motion sensor failures on all iPad models.
