iPad Pro M4 Not Turning On Fix Guide
iPad Pro M4 completely dead? Black screen, no response to buttons? This is Apple's thinnest iPad ever β and its OLED display means a "black screen" could be a frozen display that's still running. Here's how to tell the difference and fix it.

π± iPad Pro M4 Quick Facts
The iPad Pro M4 (released May 2024) comes in 11-inch and 13-inch models. Key specs that matter for troubleshooting:
- Tandem OLED display: True blacks mean you literally cannot tell if the screen is off or showing a black image. An LCD would show a faint backlight glow β OLED doesn't.
- USB-C / Thunderbolt 4: Supports up to 240W PD charging, but the included adapter is only 20W (11") or 20W (13"). Use at least 30W for faster revival from deep discharge.
- Battery: 31.29 Wh (11") or 38.99 Wh (13") β larger batteries take longer to revive from zero.
- No Home button: Force restart uses a button combination, not Home+Power.
- Face ID: Located on the top edge (landscape orientation). If Face ID stops working after a screen repair, the TrueDepth camera may have been disconnected.
β‘ Step 1: Charge It (Properly)
The most common reason an iPad Pro M4 "won't turn on" is a deeply discharged battery. And with OLED, you can't see the faint charging indicator until the battery reaches ~2%.
- Plug in using the included USB-C cable (or any USB-C cable you know works) and a 20W+ adapter
- Wait 15-30 minutes β don't touch any buttons during this time
- After 15 minutes, look for the charging icon (battery with lightning bolt). On OLED, it appears briefly then the screen goes dark again β this is normal.
- If nothing appears after 30 minutes, try a different cable and adapter
Critical: If the iPad was left dead for weeks or months, it may need 30-60 minutes before showing any sign of life. The battery management system won't allow startup until minimum voltage is reached. Be patient.
π Step 2: Force Restart
If the iPad has charge but the screen is black, it may be frozen. The force restart for iPad Pro M4 (no Home button) is:
- Press and quickly release Volume Up
- Press and quickly release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Top Button (power) for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple logo
Important: The sequence must be quick β Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold Power. If you hold Volume Up too long, you'll enter a different mode. Practice the rhythm: tap-tap-hold.
If the Apple logo appears, the iPad was frozen, not dead. Let it boot completely (may take 1-2 minutes if it's been stuck for a while).
π Step 3: Check If It's Actually On
Because OLED shows true black, your iPad might be running with a display issue. Test this:
- Try Siri: Say "Hey Siri" or press and hold the Top Button for 3 seconds. If Siri responds with sound, the iPad is on β it's a display problem.
- Listen for sounds: Try sending an iMessage from another device, or set an alarm. If you hear notification sounds, the iPad is alive.
- Connect to a computer: Plug into a Mac or PC. If it appears in Finder/iTunes, the iPad is on with a dead display.
- Feel for vibration: The iPad Pro M4 has no haptic motor, but you may feel slight warmth if it's running.
If the iPad is on but the screen is black, this is likely a display hardware failure or a disconnected display cable. See Step 7.
π₯οΈ Step 4: Recovery Mode
If force restart didn't work but the iPad has charge, try Recovery Mode. You'll need a Mac or Windows PC with the latest iTunes (Windows) or Finder (macOS Catalina+).
- Connect iPad to computer via USB-C cable
- Perform the force restart sequence: Volume Up (release) β Volume Down (release) β Hold Top Button
- Keep holding the Top Button even after the Apple logo appears β wait for the Recovery Mode screen (cable-pointing-to-computer icon)
- On your computer, Finder/iTunes will show "There is a problem with the iPad"
- Click "Update" first (this reinstalls iPadOS without erasing data)
- If Update fails, click "Restore" (this erases all data and reinstalls fresh)
π§ Step 5: DFU Mode (Last Resort Software Fix)
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode goes deeper than Recovery Mode β it reinstalls the firmware itself. Use this only if Recovery Mode failed.
- Connect iPad to computer via USB-C
- Press and quickly release Volume Up
- Press and quickly release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Top Button for 10 seconds
- While still holding Top Button, also press and hold Volume Down for 5 seconds
- Release Top Button but keep holding Volume Down for 10 more seconds
- The screen should stay completely black (no logo). If you see the Apple logo, you went too far β start over.
- Your computer should detect the iPad in DFU mode β click Restore
DFU timing is tricky. The hold-and-release timing must be precise. If it doesn't work the first time, try again β most people need 2-3 attempts.
π‘οΈ Step 6: Temperature Issues
The iPad Pro M4 can refuse to turn on if it's too hot or too cold:
- Too cold (below 32Β°F / 0Β°C): Bring it to room temperature and wait 20 minutes. Lithium batteries temporarily lose capacity in cold.
- Too hot (above 95Β°F / 35Β°C): A temperature warning screen may appear, or the iPad may shut down and refuse to boot until cooled. Remove any case, move to a cool area, wait 15 minutes.
- Left in a car: Summer car interiors can exceed 150Β°F β this can cause permanent battery damage. If the iPad was in extreme heat and won't charge or turn on after cooling, the battery may be damaged.
π Recommended Accessories
- 30W+ USB-C Chargers for iPad Pro β Faster than the included 20W, essential for deep discharge recovery
- USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 Cables β Quality cables prevent charging failures from bad connections
- iPad Pro M4 Cases β Protect against drops that cause display cable disconnection
π₯ Step 7: When It's Hardware
If nothing above worked, you're likely dealing with a hardware failure:
- Display failure: The Tandem OLED panel can fail from impact or manufacturing defect. Apple replaces the display for $499 (11") or $699 (13") out of warranty β $29 with AppleCare+.
- Battery failure: If the iPad charges (shows in Finder when connected) but won't boot off battery, the battery cell has failed. Apple charges $149 for iPad Pro battery service.
- Logic board: No response to any input, no detection by computer, no warmth = possible logic board failure. This is the most expensive repair ($500-$800+) and often worth considering replacement.
- Water damage: No water resistance rating on iPad Pro. If liquid got in through the USB-C port or speaker grills, corrosion can cause intermittent or permanent failure. Open it quickly or get to Apple ASAP.
- Apple Diagnostics: An Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider can run hardware diagnostics that check every subsystem. Book a Genius Bar appointment before paying for any repair.
