First — Charge It

Apple Pencil Pro batteries last about 2–3 weeks of light use, but a few hours of constant drawing can drain them. If you haven't used the pencil in a while, the battery may be fully discharged. Even with charge, a dead pencil won't pair until it has at least 5% battery.

  1. Magnetically attach the Pencil Pro to the long side of the iPad Pro M4 (not the short top — that's only for older models)
  2. Wait at least 30 minutes (Pencil charges from 0% to ~25% in 30 min)
  3. Try pairing again

If Charging Doesn't Help — Software Reset

  1. Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to Apple Pencil Pro → Forget This Device
  2. Restart iPad Pro M4 (hold top button + volume up until power slider)
  3. After restart, attach the pencil magnetically — pairing prompt should appear automatically
  4. If no prompt, go to Settings → Apple Pencil → tap to add new pencil

Hardware Diagnostics

If software resets don't work, test the hardware:

  • Try the pencil on a friend's iPad Pro M4 — if it pairs, your iPad's Bluetooth or Pencil chip is the issue
  • Try a friend's pencil on yours — if their pencil pairs, your pencil is dead
  • Inspect the magnetic contact strip on the side of the iPad — should be a thin gray stripe with no debris or scratches
  • Look at the Pencil Pro tip — if visibly worn flat or chipped, replace the tip ($19) and try again

If the iPad's pairing hardware is broken, you're looking at a $300+ repair (or replacement at $400+). If the Pencil itself is dead, it's $69 with AppleCare+ on the iPad, or $129 for a new one.
