iPad Pro 13-inch M2 Not Charging

🔍 Step 1: Diagnose the Problem

• No charging indicator: Cable, adapter, or dirty Thunderbolt port
• "Not Charging" in status bar: Adapter wattage too low for screen-on draw
• Charges when screen is off but not when on: Low-wattage adapter — upgrade
• Data/display works but won't charge: Cable supports data but not full Power Delivery
• Stuck at 80%: Optimized Battery Charging — intentional

⚡ Step 2: Wattage Requirements

The 13-inch M2 Pro has the largest battery of any iPad. It needs more power than smaller iPads:

• 5W (phone charger): "Not Charging" with screen on — completely inadequate
• 20W USB-C PD: Minimum for screen-on charging — slow
• 30W USB-C PD: Comfortable standard charging speed (included in box)
• 67W USB-C PD: Fast charging — full battery in ~2 hours
• 96W USB-C PD: Maximum the M2 iPad Pro will accept

The 13-inch M2 Pro came with a 30W USB-C adapter. Using a phone charger for a device this size will result in "Not Charging" during any active use.

🔌 Step 3: Cable Quality

iPad Pro 13" M2 has a Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 port. For charging, any USB-C PD cable works — but cheap cables may throttle wattage:

1. Use the cable included with the iPad — rated for full PD at 30W+
2. For 67W+ fast charging: use a cable rated at 100W to avoid thermal throttling in the cable
3. Avoid thin or generic USB-C cables — they often cap at 5-7.5W regardless of adapter

🧹 Step 4: Clean the Thunderbolt Port

1. Power off the iPad Pro 13" M2 completely
2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick — never metal
3. Inspect with flashlight — debris at port bottom
4. Gently scrape out, then compressed air
5. Cable should seat firmly with no wobble after cleaning
