The iPad Pro 11 has been available in multiple generations (2018-2024) with varying display types. If your screen flickers, these steps will help diagnose the issue.
Step 1: Force Restart Your iPad
Step 1
A simple restart often fixes temporary display glitches:
- Press and quickly release Volume Up
- Press and quickly release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Top Button until the Power Off slider appears
- Slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then turn back on
Step 2: Check Display Settings
Step 2
Go to Settings → Display & Brightness:
- If ProMotion is enabled (120Hz), try turning it OFF temporarily to test
- Check if True Tone is causing issues: toggle off and test
- Try adjusting brightness — flicker sometimes appears at certain levels
Step 3: Update iPadOS
Step 3
Go to Settings → General → Software Update:
- Apple releases display-related fixes in updates
- Make sure you're on the latest version
- Check if flickering stops after updating
Step 4: Disable ProMotion (If You Have It)
Step 4
iPad Pro models 2017 and newer support 120Hz ProMotion:
- Go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Refresh Rate
- If available, set to 60Hz (standard refresh)
- If flickering stops, the issue is with high-refresh support
Step 5: Check for Liquid Damage
Step 5
Water or liquid exposure can cause flickering:
- Inspect around the edges of the screen for moisture
- Look for discoloration or marks inside the screen
- If you suspect water damage, don't use the device — bring it to Apple
Note: iPad Pro 11 (M1 and later) has an IP rating for water resistance, but the display may still be damaged by liquids inside the device.
Step 6: Disable Animated Wallpapers
Step 6
Certain wallpapers can trigger flickering on some devices:
- Go to Settings → Wallpaper → Choose a New Wallpaper
- Switch to a static wallpaper and test
- If flickering stops, the animated wallpaper was the cause
Step 7: Test in Safe Mode
Step 7
Disable third-party apps to check if one is causing the issue:
- Force restart and hold Volume Up until the Setup screen appears
- If flickering disappears in Safe Mode, a third-party app is the problem
- Restart normally and delete recently installed apps
Step 8: Reset Display Settings
Step 8
Reset all display settings to default:
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset
- Tap Reset All Settings
- This won't delete data, only preferences
When It's a Hardware Problem
Final Step
If flickering persists, it may be a hardware issue:
- The LCD/OLED panel may be defective
- The display connector might be loose internally
- Check warranty: checkcoverage.apple.com
- iPad Pro 11 screen replacement: $199-299 out of warranty
