Stage Manager (M-series iPad)

Settings → Multitasking → Stage Manager → ON. Apps stack in groups (like Mac windows). Resize, overlap, mix 4+ apps. Way more powerful than Split View. M1 iPad+ only.

Split View (All iPads)

Open Mail. Drag Safari from Dock to right edge of screen → drops as 50/50 split. Drag divider to resize. Replace either app by dragging in another. Best free multitasking.

Slide Over (Quick Reference)

While in any app, swipe up dock → drag app onto screen middle → it floats. Use as quick lookup (Calendar, Calculator, Notes). Doesn't replace main app.

External Display (Stage Manager Only)

iPad Air M3+ or iPad Pro M4 + Stage Manager → connect USB-C monitor → iPad becomes Mac-like. iPad screen + external = two displays. Different apps each. Closest iPad has come to laptop replacement.

Keyboard Shortcuts (iPadOS 18)

  • Cmd+Tab — switch apps (like Mac)
  • Cmd+Space — Spotlight
  • Cmd+H — home
  • Cmd+Shift+Tab — Stage Manager pile cycle
  • Cmd+, — settings of current app
  • Globe key + arrow — switch screens

My iPad Pro M4 Workflow

Stage Manager + 27" external monitor + Magic Keyboard. Run Final Cut Pro on iPad screen, Procreate on external. Or split: research browser + writing app + Slack. Genuinely replaces Mac for ~40% of my workflow.
