iPad mini 6 Not Charging
iPad mini 6 (September 2021) switched from Lightning to USB-C for the first time in the mini line โ making it the smallest iPad with the most cable confusion. Here's how to fix every charging issue on the mini 6.
โ ๏ธ First: USB-C, Not Lightning
iPad mini 5 (2019) used Lightning. iPad mini 6 (2021) uses USB-C. If your cable doesn't fit, you have the wrong cable โ you need USB-C, not Lightning. This is the most common "won't charge" confusion for mini 6 owners coming from a mini 5.
๐ Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- No charging indicator at all: Cable, adapter, or deeply depleted battery
- "Not Charging" in status bar: Adapter too weak โ screen-on draw exceeds charge rate
- Charges only when screen is off: Low-wattage adapter โ upgrade to 20W+
- Very slow charging (2-3% per hour): Using a 5W or 7.5W phone charger
- Works on one cable but not another: Passive USB-C cable vs Power Delivery capable cable
โก Step 2: Charger Wattage for iPad mini 6
The mini 6 has a 19.3Wh battery โ compact but still much larger than any iPhone. Low-wattage chargers simply can't keep up when the screen is on:
- 5W (old iPhone cube): Shows "Not Charging" with screen on โ actually discharging slowly while plugged in
- 12W (older iPad charger): Charges very slowly, just barely keeps up while screen is active
- 18W-20W USB-C PD: Standard comfortable charging speed
- 30W USB-C PD: Fast charge โ best option for quick top-ups
Apple includes a 20W USB-C adapter with the mini 6 โ if you're using anything else, wattage may be your problem.
๐ Step 3: Check the USB-C Cable
USB-C cables vary hugely in power capability. A data-only or passive USB-C cable may limit charging to 5W regardless of adapter:
- Use the cable that came with your mini 6 โ it's USB-C with Power Delivery support
- Look for cables rated at 30W+ or labeled USB-C PD
- Avoid ultra-thin USB-C cables โ these typically carry minimal current
- Inspect cable ends for damage โ USB-C cables fail silently at the connector bend points
- Try a completely different cable to rule out cable failure
๐งน Step 4: Clean the USB-C Port
iPad mini 6 is 4+ years old โ lint accumulation in the USB-C port is common:
- Power off the iPad mini 6
- Use a wooden or plastic toothpick โ never metal
- Shine a flashlight into the port โ look for debris at the back
- Gently scrape any lint toward the opening and remove
- Compressed air to clear remaining debris
- Reconnect โ a clean port seats the cable firmly with no wobble
โ๏ธ Step 5: Optimized Battery Charging
- Settings โ Battery โ Battery Health โ Optimized Battery Charging
- If stuck at 80%, this feature is active and holding the charge intentionally
- Disable temporarily to charge to 100%, or leave plugged in โ it will complete when iOS predicts you'll need it
๐ Step 6: Force Restart
iPad mini 6 (no Home button, Touch ID in top button):
- Quickly press and release Volume Up
- Quickly press and release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Top button until Apple logo appears
- After boot, plug in charger and check the status bar for the charging indicator
๐ Battery Health
iPad mini 6 launched September 2021 โ at 4+ years old, battery wear check:
- Settings โ Battery โ Battery Health (iPadOS 17+)
- Under 80% capacity warrants battery service evaluation
