Which Keyboard Problem Do You Have?

  • On-screen keyboard won't appear โ†’ Fixes 1, 2, 3
  • Magic Keyboard / Smart Keyboard not working โ†’ Fixes 4, 5
  • Bluetooth keyboard not connecting โ†’ Fix 6
  • Wrong language / wrong characters typing โ†’ Fix 7
  • Keyboard disappeared mid-use โ†’ Fix 2

Step-by-Step Fixes

1Disconnect Hardware Keyboards First

When a hardware keyboard is connected (via Bluetooth or Smart Connector), the on-screen keyboard hides automatically:

  1. Remove any Smart Folio, Magic Keyboard, or Smart Keyboard case
  2. Go to Settings โ†’ Bluetooth โ†’ disconnect any paired keyboards
  3. The on-screen keyboard should reappear when you tap any text field
If your on-screen keyboard is missing, a connected hardware keyboard is almost always the reason.

2Show the On-Screen Keyboard Manually

If a hardware keyboard is connected but you want the on-screen keyboard too:

  1. Tap any text field to select it
  2. Look for the keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner of the keyboard row
  3. Tap and hold it โ†’ select "Show Keyboard" or "Undock"
  4. Alternatively: long-press the keyboard dismiss key (โŒจ icon at bottom right) to toggle

3Force Restart the iPad

iPad with Face ID (no Home button):

  1. Press and release Volume Up โ†’ press and release Volume Down โ†’ hold Top button until Apple logo

iPad with Home button:

  1. Hold Home + Top button simultaneously until Apple logo appears

A software freeze can cause the keyboard to stop responding โ€” force restart clears it.

4Clean the Smart Connector (Magic Keyboard / Smart Keyboard)

The Smart Connector is the 3-pin magnetic connection point on the iPad's side. Debris here causes intermittent disconnections:

  1. Find the Smart Connector on the left side or bottom of your iPad (3 small gold dots)
  2. Clean with a dry, soft-bristle toothbrush โ€” brush lightly across the pins
  3. Also clean the matching pins on the keyboard case
  4. Reconnect the keyboard and test

5Update Magic Keyboard Firmware

  1. Connect Magic Keyboard via USB-C or the Smart Connector
  2. Install any pending iPadOS updates โ€” keyboard firmware updates install automatically alongside iPadOS
  3. Check: Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update

6Re-pair Bluetooth Keyboard

  1. Settings โ†’ Bluetooth โ†’ tap (i) next to the keyboard โ†’ Forget This Device
  2. Turn the keyboard off and back on
  3. Put it in pairing mode (usually hold the power button until a light flashes)
  4. Select it from the Bluetooth devices list on iPad

7Fix Wrong Language / Wrong Characters

Accidentally added a second keyboard language and it switched without you noticing:

  1. Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Keyboard โ†’ Keyboards
  2. Remove any keyboard language you don't want
  3. If only one language is listed but characters are wrong, tap the Globe key on-screen to cycle back to your language

8Reset Keyboard Dictionary

Corrupted autocorrect dictionary can cause keyboard misbehavior:

  1. Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Transfer or Reset iPad โ†’ Reset โ†’ Reset Keyboard Dictionary
  2. Clears all learned words and autocorrect customizations
  3. Does not delete any other data
If none of these fixes work and the on-screen keyboard still won't appear in any app, a full iPadOS restore may be needed โ€” the touch digitizer (for registering taps to activate the keyboard) may also be at fault.
