Step-by-Step Fixes
1Disconnect Hardware Keyboards First
When a hardware keyboard is connected (via Bluetooth or Smart Connector), the on-screen keyboard hides automatically:
- Remove any Smart Folio, Magic Keyboard, or Smart Keyboard case
- Go to Settings โ Bluetooth โ disconnect any paired keyboards
- The on-screen keyboard should reappear when you tap any text field
2Show the On-Screen Keyboard Manually
If a hardware keyboard is connected but you want the on-screen keyboard too:
- Tap any text field to select it
- Look for the keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner of the keyboard row
- Tap and hold it โ select "Show Keyboard" or "Undock"
- Alternatively: long-press the keyboard dismiss key (โจ icon at bottom right) to toggle
3Force Restart the iPad
iPad with Face ID (no Home button):
- Press and release Volume Up โ press and release Volume Down โ hold Top button until Apple logo
iPad with Home button:
- Hold Home + Top button simultaneously until Apple logo appears
A software freeze can cause the keyboard to stop responding โ force restart clears it.
4Clean the Smart Connector (Magic Keyboard / Smart Keyboard)
The Smart Connector is the 3-pin magnetic connection point on the iPad's side. Debris here causes intermittent disconnections:
- Find the Smart Connector on the left side or bottom of your iPad (3 small gold dots)
- Clean with a dry, soft-bristle toothbrush โ brush lightly across the pins
- Also clean the matching pins on the keyboard case
- Reconnect the keyboard and test
5Update Magic Keyboard Firmware
- Connect Magic Keyboard via USB-C or the Smart Connector
- Install any pending iPadOS updates โ keyboard firmware updates install automatically alongside iPadOS
- Check: Settings โ General โ Software Update
6Re-pair Bluetooth Keyboard
- Settings โ Bluetooth โ tap (i) next to the keyboard โ Forget This Device
- Turn the keyboard off and back on
- Put it in pairing mode (usually hold the power button until a light flashes)
- Select it from the Bluetooth devices list on iPad
7Fix Wrong Language / Wrong Characters
Accidentally added a second keyboard language and it switched without you noticing:
- Settings โ General โ Keyboard โ Keyboards
- Remove any keyboard language you don't want
- If only one language is listed but characters are wrong, tap the Globe key on-screen to cycle back to your language
8Reset Keyboard Dictionary
Corrupted autocorrect dictionary can cause keyboard misbehavior:
- Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset iPad โ Reset โ Reset Keyboard Dictionary
- Clears all learned words and autocorrect customizations
- Does not delete any other data
