iPad Center Stage Not Working - Fix Guide
Center Stage uses the Ultra Wide front camera and machine learning to keep you centered in the frame during video calls, even as you move around. If it's not working, here's how to fix it.
📋 Supported iPads
Center Stage requires specific hardware:
- iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation and later)
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation and later)
- iPad (9th generation and later)
- iPad Air (4th generation and later)
- iPad mini (6th generation)
Older iPads do NOT support Center Stage.
✅ Enable Center Stage
During a Video Call:
- Start a FaceTime or supported video call
- Swipe down from top-right to open Control Center
- Tap Video Effects
- Tap Center Stage to turn it ON (highlighted)
In Settings:
- Settings → FaceTime
- Enable Center Stage
🔧 Troubleshooting
1. Check App Support
Center Stage works with:
- FaceTime
- Zoom
- Microsoft Teams
- Google Meet
- Webex
- Many other video apps
Some apps may have their own toggle for Center Stage in video settings.
2. Use Front Camera
Center Stage only works with the FRONT camera. Make sure you're not accidentally using the rear camera.
3. Good Lighting
Center Stage uses computer vision — it works better with:
- Good, even lighting on your face
- Not too bright (avoid backlight/windows behind you)
- Clear view of your face (not too far away)
4. Restart the App
- Close the video app completely (swipe up from bottom, swipe app away)
- Reopen the app
- Start new call and check Center Stage
5. Restart iPad
- Press and hold Top button + Volume button
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds, turn back on
6. Update iPadOS
- Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
🎭 Center Stage with Multiple People
Center Stage can track multiple people and widen the frame:
- When others enter frame, camera zooms out
- When they leave, camera zooms back in on you
- Works with groups in conference calls
💻 Center Stage on Mac
If using iPad as webcam via Continuity Camera, Center Stage works on Mac too:
- Connect iPad as Continuity Camera
- In video app on Mac, click Video Effects in menu bar
- Enable Center Stage
🔄 Reset All Settings
If Center Stage still doesn't work:
- Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad
- Reset → Reset All Settings
- Re-enable Center Stage after reset
