๐ Diagnose the Issue
Identify which camera and what problem you're facing:
- Black screen in Camera app: Camera may be stuck or software issue
- Camera app won't open: Software crash or permission issue
- Shows "Camera Unavailable" error: Hardware disabled or in use
- Blurry or out of focus: Lens dirty or autofocus failure
- No video in FaceTime but photo app works: Permission issue
- Front and rear both fail: iOS issue or hardware fault
โ Step 1: Force Close the Camera App
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open App Switcher
- Find the Camera app in the list
- Swipe up on the Camera app to close it completely
- Wait 10 seconds, then reopen the Camera app
๐ Step 2: Force Restart Your iPad
A force restart can fix many camera issues:
- iPad with Home button: Press and hold the top button + home button until the power-off screen appears, then slide to power off
- iPad without Home button: Press volume up, press volume down, then press and hold the top button until power-off screen appears
- Wait 5 seconds, then press the top button to power back on
- Test the camera โ wait for the iPad to fully boot first
๐ Step 3: Check Camera Permissions
Apps need permission to access your iPad's camera:
- Go to Settings โ Privacy & Security
- Tap Camera
- Ensure the apps you want to use camera are enabled (green toggle)
- If an app shows Disabled, toggle it on
- For FaceTime: Go back and tap Microphone โ ensure FaceTime is enabled there too
๐งน Step 4: Clean the Camera Lens
Dust and smudges can make the camera appear to not work:
- Look at the camera lens: Both front and rear cameras have small lenses
- Wipe gently: Use a soft, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber cloth)
- Remove debris: If there's dust, use a dry air blower (not compressed air directly โ too forceful)
- Avoid liquids: Never use water or cleaning solutions
- Reopen the Camera app and test
๐ Step 5: Check if Camera is in Use
If another app is using the camera, the Camera app will fail:
- Force close all apps that might use the camera (FaceTime, Zoom, Snapchat, etc.)
- Look for an orange dot in the top-right corner of the screen โ indicates camera is in use
- Swipe up to open App Switcher and close any app with that orange dot
- Try the Camera app again
๐ฑ Step 6: Update iPadOS
Outdated software can cause camera issues:
- Go to Settings โ General โ Software Update
- If an update is available, connect to Wi-Fi and tap Download and Install
- Allow the update to complete and your iPad to restart
- Test the camera after the update
๐ง Step 7: Reset Camera Settings
- Go to Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset
- Tap Reset
- Select Reset All Settings (this doesn't erase data, just settings)
- Confirm with your passcode
- Wait for the reset to complete and test the camera
๐งช Step 8: Test in Safe Mode
Determine if a third-party app is causing the issue:
- Force restart your iPad (see Step 2)
- Immediately after the Apple logo appears, hold the volume up button
- Continue holding until your iPad fully boots (you'll see "Safe Mode" in the status bar)
- Test the Camera app โ if it works in Safe Mode, a third-party app is the problem
- Exit Safe Mode by restarting normally
โ ๏ธ When Professional Help Is Needed
- Camera physically damaged: Cracked lens or visible damage
- Water damage: iPad was exposed to liquid and camera stopped working
- Still black screen after all steps: Camera module failure โ needs replacement
- One camera works, the other doesn't: Specific camera module failed
- Orange dot visible but no app using camera: Camera hardware in a stuck state โ needs diagnostics
Camera module replacement requires micro-soldering and is a complex professional repair.
