๐ Before You Start: Check Battery Health
Confirm the battery is actually failing, not a software issue:
- Go to Settings โ General โ About
- Look for Battery Health & Charging section
- If capacity shows less than 80%, battery replacement is warranted
- If it shows 91-99%, try a force restart first: press and hold power + home button until the Apple logo appears
โ What You'll Need
- iPad Air replacement battery โ matched to your generation (see "Which Battery?" below)

๐ฏ Which Battery Do You Need?
iPad Air 6th Generation (2024, M2): Part number A3088 or A3089 (11-inch)
iPad Air 5th Generation (2022, M1): Part number A2838 or A2843 (11-inch)
Older iPad Air models: Check Apple's official specifications page for your year/size
Always verify your battery part number matches your iPad Air model โ buying a wrong battery wastes money and time.
๐ Step 1: Backup and Power Off
- Back up your iPad via iCloud (Settings โ [Your Name] โ iCloud โ iCloud Backup)
- Power off completely (press and hold Power button until "Slide to Power Off" appears)
- Wait 5 minutes before proceeding
๐ฅ Step 2: Heat the Screen and Separate from Frame
iPad Air screen is glued down โ heat softens the adhesive:
- Use a heat gun (130-140ยฐC / 260-285ยฐF) or hair dryer on high for 45-60 seconds
- Move the heat source slowly and evenly around the iPad's perimeter
- The frame should feel warm but not too hot to touch
- Place a suction cup near the top edge of the screen (away from Face ID camera)
- Pull gently upward โ do not jerk
- Insert a plastic spudger into the gap and slowly work it around the edges, separating the screen
- Go slowly โ the battery is just under the screen, and you don't want to puncture it
๐ Step 3: Disconnect Screen Connectors
- Once the screen is separated, you'll see two or three flex cable connectors at the top
- Gently disconnect each connector by lifting the cable out โ they should pull straight up
- Place the screen safely aside (still attached by cables if easier to manage)
๐ Step 4: Locate and Disconnect the Battery
The battery is a large rectangular component near the center of the iPad:
- You'll see the battery as a large rectangular piece with two connector tabs at the top
- Using tweezers or a plastic spudger, gently disconnect the battery connector (the flex cable attached to the battery) โ pull straight up
- Also disconnect the power connector nearby (a smaller plug)
- These are crucial safety steps โ never work on a battery with power still connected
๐ฏ Step 5: Remove the Old Battery
iPad Air batteries are glued down with strong adhesive:
- Use a heat gun to warm the battery area slightly (not as intensely as the screen)
- Gently work a plastic spudger under one corner of the battery
- Lift slowly โ if it resists, heat more and try again
- Never pry aggressively โ you risk damaging surrounding components or puncturing the battery (dangerous!)
- Once lifted, use isopropyl alcohol to clean any remaining adhesive from the frame
๐งน Step 6: Clean and Prepare the Frame
- Use isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth to wipe down the area where the old battery was
- Remove all old adhesive residue โ any remaining glue reduces bonding of the new battery
- Allow the area to dry for 5 minutes
- Inspect for any damage to the frame or nearby components
โจ Step 7: Install the New Battery
- Do not connect the battery yet โ leave connectors unplugged during installation
- Apply battery adhesive strips to the frame (pre-cut strips usually come with the battery kit)
- Some kits use roll adhesive โ apply it carefully along the sides
- Carefully position the new battery, aligning connectors at the top
- Press firmly to activate the adhesive, applying steady pressure for 30-60 seconds
- Ensure the battery is centered and sits flat โ no bulging or tilting
๐ Step 8: Reconnect Battery and Power
- Using tweezers, carefully reconnect the battery connector (the main flex cable) โ push straight down until you hear/feel a click
- Reconnect the power connector
- Double-check both are seated firmly
- Do not power on yet โ wait until the screen is reattached
๐ฑ Step 9: Reattach the Screen
- Reconnect the screen's flex cable connectors at the top (should plug straight in)
- Carefully align the screen with the frame
- Slowly lower it, starting at the top
- Once aligned, press firmly around the edges to activate the screen adhesive
- The screen should sit flush with the frame โ no gaps or bulges
โ Step 10: Power On and Test
- Press the power button and wait for the Apple logo
- If the iPad doesn't power on immediately, let it charge for 5 minutes (the new battery may be partially drained)
- Check battery health: Settings โ General โ About โ Battery Health
- It should now show 100% or close to it
- Test basic functions: screen touch, volume, home button
- Use the iPad normally for a few hours, then check battery drain โ it should be minimal
โ ๏ธ Troubleshooting
iPad won't power on after battery replacement:
- Battery connector may not be fully seated โ power off and reseat it
- Power connector may be loose โ check and press down firmly
- Let the iPad charge for 15+ minutes before trying again
Screen doesn't respond to touch:
- Screen connectors may not be fully seated โ power off and reconnect them
- Old adhesive or debris may be blocking connector contact โ clean with isopropyl alcohol
Battery still drains quickly:
- Force restart the iPad (press and hold Power + Home until Apple logo appears)
- Go to Settings โ General โ Reset โ Reset All Settings (doesn't erase data)
