iPad Air 4 Not Charging
iPad Air 4 (October 2020) was the first Air with USB-C and the modern flat-edge design โ a big step forward that also introduced USB-C charging confusion. At 5+ years old, port cleaning and battery health are now real factors too. Here's every fix.

โ ๏ธ First: USB-C Only
iPad Air 4 uses USB-C โ not Lightning. If you have an older Lightning cable, it won't fit. This was the Air's first USB-C port, replacing Lightning that all previous Airs used.
๐ Step 1: Diagnose the Problem
- No charging icon when plugged in: Cable or adapter failure, depleted battery, or dirty port
- "Not Charging" in status bar: Adapter wattage below screen-on draw โ upgrade your charger
- Charges only when screen is off: Low-wattage adapter can't keep up with active display
- Slow charging (3-4% per hour): 5W phone charger โ not adequate for iPad
- One cable works but another doesn't: Cable Power Delivery capability mismatch
โก Step 2: Charger Wattage
iPad Air 4 has a 28.65Wh battery (A14 Bionic). Low-wattage chargers cannot overcome screen-on power draw:
- 5W (old iPhone charger): Shows "Not Charging" with display active; trickle-charges with screen off
- 12W (older iPad charger): Barely keeps up; charges very slowly (4+ hours for full charge)
- 18W-20W USB-C PD: Proper charging speed โ what Apple includes in the box
- 30W USB-C PD: Fast charge โ best for quick top-ups
๐ Step 3: USB-C Cable Quality
Not all USB-C cables support Power Delivery. A passive data cable may only allow 5-7.5W even with a 30W adapter:
- Use the cable included with the iPad Air 4 โ it supports full Power Delivery
- Look for cables labeled USB-C PD or rated 30W+
- Avoid ultra-thin USB-C cables โ typically data-only with minimal current capacity
- Inspect both ends for damage โ USB-C cables fail internally at the connector bend
๐งน Step 4: Clean the USB-C Port
At 5+ years old, the USB-C port has had plenty of time to collect pocket lint:
- Power off the iPad Air 4 completely
- Use a wooden or plastic toothpick โ never metal in USB-C
- Shine a light in โ look for debris at the back of the port
- Gently scrape lint out toward the opening
- Compressed air to clear remaining debris
- Plug cable in โ a clean port seats firmly with no wobble
โ๏ธ Step 5: Optimized Battery Charging
- Settings โ Battery โ Battery Health โ Optimized Battery Charging
- If paused at 80%, this is working as designed โ charging will complete based on your usage schedule
- Disable temporarily if you need 100% right now
๐ Step 6: Force Restart
iPad Air 4 (no Home button, Touch ID in power button):
- Quickly press and release Volume Up
- Quickly press and release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Top button until Apple logo appears
- Plug in charger after boot and check status bar for charging indicator
๐ Battery Health
iPad Air 4 launched October 2020 โ at 5+ years, battery wear is worth checking:
- Settings โ Battery โ Battery Health (iPadOS 17+)
- Below 80% capacity: battery replacement evaluation recommended
