1. Battery Draining Faster Than Usual
After any major iOS update, background indexing (Spotlight, Photos ML) runs for 24-72 hours and hammers your battery. If drain persists beyond 3 days, try these steps:
- Go to Settings → Battery and check which apps use the most power. Look for anything above 20%.
- Disable Background App Refresh for apps you don't need real-time updates from (Settings → General → Background App Refresh).
- Turn off Live Activities for apps abusing it: Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Allow Access When Locked → Live Activities.
- Reset location services: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → set heavy-use apps to "While Using."
- If battery health is below 80%, the update may have exposed a worn battery. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging.
2. iPhone Overheating After Update
Overheating right after an update is usually caused by background re-indexing. Here's what to do:
- Let the phone sit on a cool surface (not in a case) for 30 minutes. Avoid using it during heavy indexing.
- Force-close any stuck apps: swipe up from the bottom and flick apps away.
- Restart your iPhone: hold Side Button + Volume Down, slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then power on.
- If overheating continues after 48 hours, do a soft reset: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings (this keeps your data).
- Remove your case while the phone cools down — thick cases trap heat.
3. Apps Crashing or Freezing
- Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, scroll down, and tap Update All. Many crashes are caused by apps not yet optimized for iOS 18.
- Delete and reinstall the crashing app — this clears corrupted cache files.
- Force restart: quickly press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side Button until the Apple logo appears.
- If a specific app keeps crashing, check its App Store page for known iOS 18 compatibility notes or contact the developer.
4. WiFi Keeps Disconnecting
- Toggle WiFi off and on: Settings → WiFi → toggle off, wait 10 seconds, toggle back on.
- Forget the network and rejoin: Settings → WiFi → tap the (i) next to your network → Forget This Network → rejoin with password.
- Reset Network Settings: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. This erases saved WiFi passwords but fixes most connectivity bugs.
- Disable Private WiFi Address temporarily: Settings → WiFi → (i) → turn off Private WiFi Address. Some routers struggle with MAC randomization.
- Update your router firmware — older routers sometimes conflict with new iOS WiFi protocols.
5. Bluetooth Not Connecting
- Turn Bluetooth off and on from Settings (not Control Center — Control Center only disconnects, it doesn't fully disable Bluetooth).
- Remove the problematic device: Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to the device → Forget This Device. Then re-pair.
- Reset Network Settings (this also resets Bluetooth pairings).
- For car Bluetooth: delete the iPhone pairing from your car's infotainment system first, then re-pair from the car side.
6. Face ID Not Working After Update
- Clean the TrueDepth camera area at the top of your screen with a microfiber cloth.
- Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Reset Face ID → Set Up Face ID again.
- Add an Alternate Appearance (same menu) — this improves recognition accuracy.
- Force restart your iPhone (Volume Up, Volume Down, hold Side Button).
- If Face ID still fails with "Face ID is not available — try setting up Face ID later," this could indicate a hardware issue with the TrueDepth sensor. Contact Apple or a repair shop.
7. "Storage Almost Full" After Update
- iOS updates download a temporary install file. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage and delete the iOS update file if it's still there.
- Clear Safari cache: Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data.
- Review "Recommendations" at the top of iPhone Storage — Apple suggests the biggest space savers.
- Enable Offload Unused Apps: Settings → App Store → Offload Unused Apps. This removes app binaries but keeps data.

Nuclear Option: Full Reset
If nothing above works, back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer, then go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Restore from your backup afterward. This fixes 95% of persistent iOS bugs.
