iCloud Storage Full - How to Free Up Space
That annoying "iCloud Storage Full" message won't go away? Here's how to free up space, manage what's backed up, and decide if upgrading is worth it.
📊 First: See What's Using Your iCloud Space
Before deleting anything, check what's actually taking up space:
On iPhone/iPad:
- Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage
- You'll see a breakdown: Photos, Backups, Messages, etc.
On Mac:
- System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage
The biggest culprits are usually Photos, Backups, and Messages.
📸 #1: Photos (Usually the Biggest Space Hog)
iCloud Photos often uses 50-80% of your storage. Options:
Option A: Delete Photos You Don't Need
- Open Photos app → Select unwanted photos → Delete
- Important: Go to Albums → Recently Deleted → Delete All
- Deleted photos stay in "Recently Deleted" for 30 days, still using space!
Option B: Turn Off iCloud Photos
- Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Photos → Toggle OFF
- Choose "Download Photos" to keep them on your device
- Then back up locally to your computer instead
Option C: Use Google Photos Instead (Free 15GB)
- Download Google Photos, enable backup
- Once backed up, turn off iCloud Photos
- Note: Google compresses photos slightly for free storage
💾 #2: Manage iCloud Backups
Old device backups eat tons of space. Clean them up:
- Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Storage → Backups
- Delete backups from old devices you no longer have
- For current device, tap it to see what's being backed up
Reduce Current Backup Size
Turn off backup for apps that don't need it:
- Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Storage → Backups → [Your Device]
- Toggle OFF apps with large data you don't need backed up
- Games with local saves are often huge (1-5GB each)
💬 #3: Messages & Attachments
Years of texts with photos/videos add up fast:
- Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Storage → Messages
- See "Top Conversations" by size
- Open Messages app → Tap a conversation → Tap the contact name → See All Photos → Select & Delete
Nuclear option: Turn off Messages in iCloud entirely (Settings → Messages → Messages in iCloud → OFF)
📁 #4: iCloud Drive Files
- Open Files app → Browse → iCloud Drive
- Look for large files you don't need
- Check Desktop and Documents folders if you sync those from Mac
💰 Should You Just Upgrade Storage?
Sometimes paying is easier than managing. iCloud+ pricing:
