MacBook Trackpad Not Clicking? 9 Fixes That Work
MacBook trackpad won't click, clicking but nothing happens, cursor jumps around, or Force Touch not working? This guide covers all fixes for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro trackpad issues on every model.
Quick Context: Force Touch Trackpad
All MacBooks since 2015 use a Force Touch trackpad β it doesn't physically move. The "click" sensation is a Taptic Engine vibration. This means the trackpad physically cannot click if the Mac is off or the battery is dead. If your trackpad seems to not click, it may be a settings or firmware issue, not hardware.
Step-by-Step Fixes
1 Check Tap to Click Setting
If clicking feels unresponsive, you may just need a firm press β or try tap-to-click instead:
- Go to System Settings β Trackpad
- Under Point & Click, enable "Tap to click"
- Now a light tap registers as a click β no pressure needed
2 Adjust Click Pressure
- Go to System Settings β Trackpad β Point & Click
- Find the Click slider and try setting it to Light
- Test the click sensitivity
3 Check for External Mouse Interference
A connected mouse can sometimes disable trackpad behavior:
- Go to System Settings β Accessibility β Pointer Control β Mouse & Trackpad
- Make sure "Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present" is OFF (unless you want it on)
4 Clean Your Hands and the Trackpad
The Force Touch trackpad is capacitive and reads electrical current from your fingers:
- Wash and dry your hands β lotion, oils, or water interfere with touch detection
- Clean the trackpad surface with a dry microfiber cloth
- Avoid using the trackpad with gloves
5 Restart Your MacBook
- Go to Apple Menu β Restart
- Wait for a full reboot β don't use fast-start/sleep shortcuts
- Test the trackpad on the login screen before logging in
6 Reset SMC (Intel Macs Only)
The System Management Controller handles hardware including the trackpad:
MacBook with T2 chip (2018β2020):
- Hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 7 seconds
- Release all, wait 5 seconds, press Power to restart
Older Intel MacBook (no T2):
- Hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side + Power for 10 seconds
- Release, then press Power normally to boot
7 Reset for Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4)
Apple Silicon Macs don't have a traditional SMC. Instead:
- Fully shut down the Mac (Apple Menu β Shut Down)
- Wait 30 seconds
- Press Power to restart
8 Delete Trackpad Preference Files
- Open Finder β Go β Go to Folder (Cmd+Shift+G)
- Go to: ~/Library/Preferences/
- Move these files to the Desktop (backup, don't delete immediately):
- com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist
- com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist
- Restart β macOS recreates them with defaults
- Re-configure your trackpad settings
9 Check for Swollen Battery
A swollen battery pushes up against the trackpad from below, physically preventing clicks:
- Look at the bottom of your MacBook β if it's bowing outward or there's a visible bulge, the battery is swollen
- A swollen battery is a fire hazard β stop using the Mac and get it serviced immediately
- Do not try to remove the battery yourself
